So many doctors are afraid of losing their license to the DEA if they prescribe pain meds, that people just about have to go to a pain specialist nowadays. The sick who can't afford a specialist can suffer amazing agony.

The situation seems to be getting worse.

The situation seems to be getting worse.

I've been hospitalized, umm, I think 8 or 9 times in the past 5 years, and will have chronic pain the rest of my life. Plus, was with 6 different relatives during the ends of their lives recently.

I am happy to report that this problem is MUCH improved. None of us had the kind of trouble getting proper pain meds that was commonplace 20 years ago.

Best I can tell, the main problems these days are:
1) Lack of health insurance, sometimes due to well-off people reaching their lifetime maximums.
2) Many patients are needlessly terrified of addiction to painkillers. This used to be a serious risk, but not anymore. I'm rotated among three different painkillers during each day, for example.
