George Foreman dead at 76 years old.
George Foreman, the fearsome heavyweight who lost the “Rumble in the Jungle” to Muhammad Ali before his inspiring second act as a 45-year-old champion and a successful businessman, died Friday night. He was 76.

Just saw this. Sad news. What a boxer, what a career and what a man!

I was a huge boxing fan in my younger days. I remember listening to accounts of the Rumble in the Jungle on my radio, shocked when Ali somehow defeated the younger powerful fellow Olympian who seemed invincible.

Years later after Foreman began to remake himself I was watching him as he knocked out Michael Morrer to reclaim a share of the heavyweight title.

He.may have made more money from endorsements and marketing. His kids (most named George) and ministry are his enduring legacy.

He.will be missed.

It is hard to imagine how devastating a fighter he was in the earlier years. He just destroyed several of the top fighters - including Joe Frazier and Ken Norton, both of whom either beat Ali or fought him to a near draw. Ali beating him was totally unexpected and a huge upset.

I was a huge Ali fan growing up. Listened to early fights on radio, read about them in SI, and waited until Wide World of Sports and Howard Cosell would interview Ali.

The fight with George had to be his greatest moment.

One of my favorite (documentary) movies is When We Were Kings, about The Rumble in the Jungle.

I was in Germany when the fight took place. Was amazed that it was on TV there (at about 2am as I remember).

I knew I was really old when I was telling my daughter about the movie, that it was about Ali fighting George Foreman. She said, you mean the guy with the grill?

Good man. Very caring. Destroyed Joe Frazier, but Ali typically outsmarted his opponent.

Agreed, and I'm huge fan of his grill. Helped me to crush many paninis in grad school.

I once saw George Foreman in Houston "back in the day"... I was probably less than 15 feet away. He was really a big dude. These top tier heavyweights are absolutely in a class of their own.

RIP Big George

He had an amazing life. From being an Olympian champion to being a beast of a fighter to a loveable preacher and like a big teddy bear selling the Foreman grills then back to being boxing champion.

Yes, sad news to hear. Related story to George Foreman, he trained in my city growing up and as kids (probably 13-14) in mid 70s, we would go to they gym and watch him work out and spar with people. He was a nice guy then, and remained that way. Always cracked me up with all of his sons named the same: George 2nd, George 3rd, George 4th, George 5th, George 6th. He was a great boxer, and yet somehow now more people will remember him for his grill.

I still remember the flack he received from some circles for walking around and waving the American flag after winning the Olympic boxing gold medal in 1968. But he always said he had no regrets about doing that and would do it again. Quite a career, much respect. RIP.

Boy how times have changed.

I was surprised to learn at one point he was making $5 million a month in grill royalties….

RIP Big George.

I believe he made more from the grill than all of his boxing. In a way, with the infomercials, he was doing the social media thing before they were called social media.

I remember the first Foreman cooker I got was a contact chicken roaster. It made the best tasting chicken. But The negative was difficulty in cleaning.

ditto.

we made it through just a few before going back to buying rotisserie chickens at the store.

Definitely broke the mold with George. Enjoy your reward, George.
