I turned 73 this year - so will be taking RMD's prior to end of year. I currently own;
  • IRA #1
  • IRA #2
  • 401a plan (public employee retirement)
  • 457 plan (deferred compensation)
I am allowed to rollover the 401 and 457 into my IRA's, and intend to do so in the interest of simplifying life. HOWEVER - it's my understanding that, while I can take the IRA related RMD's from either (or both) of those accounts, I am required to take the 401a and 457 RMD's from each individually.

My question -
  • Can I do the rollover prior to taking the RMD's from the 401a and 457 accounts? If so, how do I show that I've met the RMD requirement for those based on 12/31/2025 balances?
  • Alternatively - am I required to take the RMD's prior to the rollover? If so then I assume I'd need to get the rollover completed prior to the end of the current year so I'm not facing the same problem next year.
  • Are there any other alternatives I'm not thinking of?

Thanks in advance.

You must take any RMDs prior to doing any Roth conversions from those accounts...

As a general rule, yes, you need to complete your RMD for the year before doing a rollover from that custodian to another one...
