I see the space thread.

With Figure.ai getting huge investment and Tesla posting a video of Optimus walking around the lab yesterday I wonder if there should be a robot thread.

Maybe we will see robots building habitats on the moon or Mars. Or at least plugging charging cables into Tesla robot taxis. Although thinking about it I don't see why the taxi would not just back into the charger like the lawn mowers do.

Thread moved to the technology forum.

It's pretty wild they've gone from prototype stage to second Gen in only about 18 months.
Soon they will have a robot workforce in the factory.

Reminds me of the Next Gen episode where they put Data on trial..

Issac Asimov famously depicted a future when human beings only used robots to explore the solar system and then the galaxy. Eventually, humanity became lazy and settled on lives of extreme luxury thanks to their willing robot servants. TR’s strenuous life was no more. In Asimov’s early stories, lazy humanity was in danger of being crowded out of the galaxy by other alien species who spread out and became far more powerful than humanity.

Interestingly, a robot saw the danger coming, and enhanced the Laws of Robotics in a way that allowed it to change human history to force humanity to spread through the galaxy. As a result humanity ends up dominating the galaxy. Another result of that change was no more robots. Or maybe not.

The basic link is mentioned in Foundation's Edge: an obscure myth about a first wave of space settlements with robots and then a second without. The idea is the one developed in Robots of Dawn, which, in addition to showing the way that the second wave of settlements was to be allowed, illustrates the benefits and shortcomings of the first wave of settlements and their so-called C/Fe (carbon/iron, signifying humans and robots together) culture.

I'm not worried about Robots as the next species until they can operate without electricity.

Otherwise, pulling the plug on them or blocking their electrons is their Achilles heel.

And they can do the same by killing our power generation or disrupting the food supply ...

I am 67 and don't have anyone lined up to care for me in my old age. I am hoping that self driving cars or robot taxis will be ready by the time I can't drive myself. Who knows. Maybe even robot health care aids at some point. I hope they perfect the coating on the hands that will be wiping my butt.

P!an B is to try to make some younger friends.

Not sure how old you are, but you might want to rethink Plan A

Spacecraft robots sent past Mars are RTG/RHU (radioactive) powered and can run 99 years at least. And robots can have refueling systems as well.

In my last job - meaning my most recent and final job  - I spent a lot of time digging into Generative AI.

The impacts of this technology are going to be shocking. World transforming in many ways and not all of them good.

The cybersecurity risks will be like nothing we've ever seen. Generative AI can right its own code and develop its own strategies. And we're on v0.5 of the technologies.

The deep fake issue isn't just for problems like Taylor Swift experiences. Everyone voice on the planet will be perfectly fakable. Every image. Even live video. I've already told my kids that if they ever get a call from someone who sounds like me or Mom asking for credit card or other info, they need to hang up and call us back.

My DD got a new phone and I got a text claiming it was her. There are hundreds of things an AI just couldn't know that we both know. I asked her one of those. What I like the most about the exchange was she answered without a blink, as if my challenge was expected. But, alas, robot topic, not AI. The two are similar, but not the same.

Robots, meaning a physical system that can manipulate objects in the space around them, are going to get better because they can be programmed more effectively. But the actuator technology doesn't seem as close to the singularity as other things. Design of physical objects and the ability to "print" them will all be assisted by AI, but all my dealings with robots indicate that they're very brittle (meaning their utility can disappear with a tiny change in the environment). So I see incremental changes, but nothing too big in the near term. Big changes from AI will probably come first. As with the Internet, I wonder if porn and gambling will lead the robotic revolution, hehe!

I think this is a huge danger for financial firms that use voice recognition as part of their customer identification. It will make it easier to get the Rep be fooled by social engineering.
Later when customer notices they have no savings, it will be used as proof the customer phoned in to make the transactions.

I think the question is how self-sufficient and non-human dependent are the robots. If the robots are like Yul Brenner in Westword that no longer follows human orders and can't be turned off. If if a Yul Brenner type robot gets to the point of secretly building other robots in "his" own vision without the pesky humans, then it's time to worry.

Sounds like a good idea now to have a Star Trek's Scotty queries "queen to queen's level 3" talk with your kids.

I think Vanguard's voice ID is probably fakeable. However, I think the device you are calling from comes into the equation. Then there is the difficulty of actually getting the money into a new account without me detecting that a new account was set up (there is a time built in too).

Any good security has multiple layers.

The future is uncertain but then it always has been.

So many ways that robots and AI can make things go awry. It is fascinating to watch.

I'll have to keep this in mind when if I get their at some point.

What makes you think they’d let you? Watch Ex Machina…very interesting movie regardless.

Like others, I just hope autonomous cars or robo taxis are perfected before the state takes my license away. My Mom passed away and a year later they took my Dad’s license, he was despondent.

+1 The experience with my mother was a bit different when my Father died. I couldn't get her Dr., the DMV/State, or anyone to take her license when it was clear she was a danger on the road due to poor eyesight, serious degradation of short term memory, etc. It took about 3 years to convince her to sell the car to me. Fortunately during that time she may have driven the car twice and made it back to assisted living. That problem was no longer an issue about 10 years ago.

kk.

In similar area, thus some kids and parents asking - which major to choose, even I am not sure if a skill will get a job after spending several years and 100s of thousands, things will be automated but how fast.

I see skills like AC tech, electrician, mechanic, Architect, plumber, doctors (surgeons only) are most future proof but no one is interested in these. What would be your answer of this question?

As far as younger generation not procreating, they will be surely taken care by robots in older age barring skynet going sentinent. Se

Figure AI partners with Open AI to use ChatGPT on the robot.

Too bad this is a private company. I think the only way for small fish to invest is through the ARK Venture Fund, which has only a small amount and is a bit convoluted to buy into.
