Scam texts for Toll Violation Notice?

My son recently received one in postal mail for slightly more than 1 dollar. I checked the webpage and told them that it is not his car, and unloaded a photo of his car. I received email later saying the bill was a mistake.

The only toll I would use is TX and I have an account with an automatic refill and get statements.

Yes, legitimate errors by plate reading software do happen relatively frequently. But in my limited experience (2 or 3 cases), the legitimate authorities are good at responding/acknowledging the mistake.

Some are from real toll agencies in an attempt to train people not to respond to these messages.

My former employer did things like that many years ago. Interesting "spam" emails with an embedded link sent to all company employees.
Employees clicking on the link in the scam email were automatically enrolled in a remedial training course stressing on NOT clicking on strange links that could be virus infection sites.

It's possible that dummies got terminated if they continued unsafe behavior on company computers. No idea if this method is still employed or if antivirus firewalls have gotten so effective that it's no longer an issue...

I've heard of someone getting one of these scam texts (confirmed not legitimate) right after using a toll road. The scammers are apparently getting really good at this one.

I get them too and haven’t been on a toll road in years. Report and delete.

I suppose that could just be luck on the scammer's part. After all, if he gets one person in a 100 to send money, he's doing very well indeed.
