Hi all,

This morning as I was loading groceries into the passenger side of my small truck I noticed a new dent in the side panel, plus the entire panel was bowed inward. Upon closer inspection, I noticed bright red paint at the site of the dent, and remembered that yesterday while at the doctor's office I was parked next to a sporty red car. It looks like they pulled in and hit the side of my truck with their bumper (and forgot to leave a note, of course).

I was thinking about stopping by body shop this morning to get a estimate. It's not a horrible dent, but it's the newest vehicle I've ever owned (2000) and it's still in creampuff condition, and we want to sell it and buy a fuel-efficient wagon.

Here's the deal: on a whim, I called the hospital (whose parking lot I used yesterday) and got ahold of the security office, and the guy there told me their lots are completely wired with security cameras. On Monday when his boss is in, they will check the tape and try to get a license plate and confirm who did this.

Anybody else have this happen to them and resolve the issue with security cameras? I am really happy that their is a chance that the offender will be caught. What a schmuck.

I forget the exact numbers, but the average person gets their picture taken or is on a video camera something like 15-20 times per day.

Kinda spooky...

Unless you live in an area that has a CCD fetish, like the UK, esp London. :)

I don't mind cameras- they have been useful in catching kidnappers and other criminal events.

I should add that I don't have any interest in pressing charges against this person, and I'm pretty confident from the looks of the red car that it wasn't an elderly person on a fixed income driving the car. Someone was probably talking on their cell phone when they pulled out of the parking spot and hit my vehicle.

About 10 years ago I backed into someone's car door in a parking lot, and made a slight dent. I went into the office and found the car's owner and fessed up. It wasn't a very nice car (lots of dents already) but it was pretty clear he wanted it fixed, and we ended up settling for $200 cash.

You will mind cameras when they are in your bedroom.
That is the natural evolution. And don't forget. The government can decide whatever they wish constitutes a crime. You name it and it can be criminalized.

John Galt- I was waiting for the libertarians to chime in! I hate seeing cameras everywhere, but parking lots are one place I am grateful for them, and not just for this incident. Dark parking lots seem to be the scene of many mysterious disappearances of women, and it's good to know that we may be able to solve these crimes more quickly and stop serial criminals from committting more crimes.

Janie,

I agree with you that cameras at parking lots are good for security purposes. There will always be issues between security vs privacy.

Case you haven't already picked up on it from what Janie said, its the conservatives that are doing these sorts of things, not the liberals (think patriot act). Liberals, ACLU, etc hate invasion of privacy.

See, you're a liberal and you didn't know it.

Re: Security cameras catch those who dent your car

Any updates Janie? Did they have anything on video?

Thanks for asking, Marshac. I've been out of town since Tuesday for work, and will call the hospital tomorrow..
