We’ve been traveling for over 40 years—and we’ve loved every minute of it.
We started with a 2-week honeymoon in Germany, all-inclusive sky lessons + the equipment + 3 meals for an unbelievable special subsidized price for students. Calculating the price including inflation is about $4K for both.
We’ve visited 49 out of 50 U.S. states, some more than once. We'll leave Alaska for when we're between 70 and 75—something to look forward to.
Internationally, we’ve taken 20+ trips to various European countries, traveled several times to the Middle East and Far East, and explored Australia, New Zealand, and Iceland.

We started with very little, and today we have millions. We've taken dozens of one-stop flights, and more than 10 flights lasting over 15 hours.
Yes, it can be exhausting—but totally worth it, and it doesn't last long enough to pay thousands more.

After I turned 60, I started feeling some discomfort from sitting too long—skinny butt problems! The solution? A $38 padded seat cushion (link)—better and much cheaper than upgrading to comfort class. I ordered and tried dozens, and this one was by far the best. You want to buy 18-19" by 16-18", not shorter than that.

We travel light: one carry-on and one personal bag each—that’s it and why we never lost our luggage. Never once have we had trouble finding overhead bin space, because we stick to the airline-approved sizes.

As for in-flight meals: long-haul food has usually been pretty good. On short flights, we plan ahead—just like we do when hiking or going on a picnic. It’s all part of the experience.

Next vacation is India with one stopover in Europe. Total flight time about 16 hours + the stopover. The price was $742 from ATL to Delhi. I could get even lower prices below $700, but not from Mid-Nov to Mid-Dec which is considered the best time.

Since my butt hurt (for the first time) during my last long-haul flight, I will give this some serious consideration. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks. I put the XL cushion in my cart.

Good deal OP!

Our first international trip after retirement was in 2017. Booked Seattle to London on Norwegian Airlines for $600 r/t for the multi-city returning from Paris. Thought it was a great deal and we loved that trip.

Flew Asiana to Vietnam via Seoul and return for $600 r/t each in 2018. Asiana was an absolute pleasure to fly on and we had another great trip. Used credit card points/miles for the first time on this trip to "erase" $600 as a travel statement credit. Wow, I was blown away that we could travel to Vietnam and back for $600 for the two of us using points/miles to slash the cost.

We've been using points/miles to help pay for most flights since. Visited 45+ countries and have already flown 70,000+ miles this year.

OP, safe travels and wishing you a great trip to India. Perhaps you can share your thoughts after the trip. My P2 is India-reluctant and I could use some good ammo.

Norwegian from Seattle was great, while it lasted. I flew them one way to Gatwick in 2019 for $335.

And I had round-trip booked with them in May 2020 for $590/person. Unfortunately, that trip didn’t happen.

It’s the only time I was bussed to a plane in Seattle and it was a 787.

We try to fly direct to Europe (multiple spots from DFW), stay & then jump to the preferred destination via plane, train or bus. Keeps any flight ~10 hrs max. We walk, stretch and catch up on all the movies we didn’t go to the theater for.

Great idea for butt comfort though and I'll share with DW when we do our next trip. We currently have a flight on hold for Venice in September... A new direct option for us.

I have only flown main cabin. The three most memorable flights were multi-stop trips from Wisconsin to Asia. Two involved adopting our children (China and South Korea). Both kids traveled as lap seat babies on the way home. The third trip was to take our kids to their home countries when they were old enough to appreciate the trip. We also flew numerous times as a family with my son's service dog. He was a golden doodle and would spend flights quietly resting at my son's feet. Once my son transitioned into a power wheelchair, flying became too problematic so we switched to road trips. DS passed about a year ago, and traveling with him is among our favorite memories.

How do you get that on the plane with only a carryon and personal item? Does it roll up? Compress?
I really need something like that

I used to fly a couple of times a month or more when I was employed. I was much younger with no health issues. Now that seating has changed along with my back and legs I can't comfortably fit my 6'1" legs into the cabin seats. I have to at least opt for the extra few inches. I don't think long flight segments are going to work for me in a cabin seat anymore and a seat cushion won't help my issues.
In the past a seat cushion would have been helpful but that is all in the past.

It's in my carryon. You can folded to half if you want and compress it a bit too.
I found another one really light, foldable and you fill it with air and then take the air out.

Whispering Winds Inflatable Seat Cushion.

Atlanta has many direct flight to Europe, but if I can save at least $350-400 per person with a stopover we do it.
A couple of years ago we vacationed in Ireland. We flew for about $500 and changed planes in Newark.
On the way back, the US customs check you very quickly in Ireland; it's maybe another 5-minute process. So, instead of doing it in the US, you fly as a domestic flight, and when you arrive in the US, you just walk to another gate.
The cheapest flight to Europe was a $200 round trip to Iceland by WOW several years ago. The Iceland Gov wanted to promote tourism. Unfortunately, WOW went bankrupt.

DW tried a cushion and it w*rked so well that (wait for it) she forgot it and left it on the plane.
