I signed up for SS on January 3rd to start April 1st. After reading everything i figured it would stay at second step until March. Even the email and information said I would get notification of approval 30 days before hand. So on Monday the 13th I received an email saying my submission status was updated. Signed in and it was approved with the correct dollar amount and when I would get my first check. I guess somebody needed something to do and it was a slow day. My wife said it isn’t done until that first check hits the bank account.

Wow, that is amazing. I'm so old that I did it all in person. Not a bad experience other than needing to find a parking place and get across Nimitz Hwy without getting run over.

I suppose your DW is correct. Until the money is in your bank account, nothing is totally confirmed. Good luck and enjoy your new source of income.

Great! DH signed up on Jan 6 to start May. We’ll be watching for that email!

Did anyone have to send in a birth certificate? It is on the list of things you have to present so I wondered if it was always. They didn’t ask for it for Medicare

They ask you where you were born. We didn’t need to present any documents as part of the online application and we don’t expect to have to present anything else.

They do want to know about prior marriages and current marriage dates. DH signed up on his own record with no prior marriage.

If there is no scheduled phone interview we will be very happy.

I have been procrastinating. I think I need a login.gov or id.me before I can sign back into myssa? I haven’t looked since they added this requirement. I compared the two authentication procefures but now I don’t remember which would be better for me.

Well DH still hasn’t converted over even though he has both sets of login credentials already. For some reason they’ve been allowing him to log in with his original credentials all this time.

I converted to login.gov last year because I already had thise credentials from GOES and also had to add for EFTPS.

I filed in early December for March 1st, and my claim is listed at the second step.

No documents required. They asked place and date of birth and information about spouse and where/when we were married. The step 2 of the application did say they would contact me if they needed any additional information. Next thing I know it was approved.

I use ID.me and DW uses login.gov. Didn’t see much difference.

When I applied back in Feb 2024, to my surprise I had pending approval in less than 2 weeks. It wasn’t until late April that I got full approval and $ details. Guess it can vary considerably.

So your SS start month was April?

I remember you were already paying Medicare premiums because you had accidentally paid for the May premium even though your May SS check (for April) would cover the May premium.

Did you ever have to do a phone appointment?

We got our first combined SS deposited into our checking account yesterday, what a relief. DH+ mine + spousal benefit. The phone interviews, checking our SS online, making sure everything is in place. Finally!

Edit: If DH paid for Medicare out of our checking account before he got SS, is that a deduction? And if you pay Part D premiums, that should be a deduction + Medicare costs.

Claimed for May, first check June. Medicare easily cleared up.

OK thanks. So you did get approved and the check details confirmed before your start month, not during your start month. Good to know.

Did you have to deal with any kind of phone appointment? I’m hoping to avoid that.

Applied online for DW on the weekend after Christmas and direct deposit was in our account on January 7th!! Message still says wait 30 days but the actual cash was much faster than that. Pretty impressed although that may make fraud easier. Not sure how much of a problem that is.

He has Medicare, if I remember correctly. If so, you may be interested in this recent Reddit post. The SSA system can't handle future dates when it's already doing Part B premium billing. It will remain pending until May.
Thanks for sharing this, I had no idea SS had some challenges/limitations if you had already started Medicare at 65 and direct debit from the bank account.

Nothing in that Reddit post mentions direct debit. It says premium billing. We all get premium billing if on Medicare before we start SS.

We don’t use EasyPay, so no direct debit from our bank account. We pay directly from our HSA accounts.

Right, it's just my way of paying the Medicare premiums.

I would like to hear about your (DH) experience as the next few months go by, if you don't mind.
