Yesterday DW received a check from the Treasury with the memo "SOC SEC FOR INS". The amount was $202.90, which is the same as the Medicare Part B amount.
I verified the check using the Treasury Check Verification System. DW started collecting SS in January '26 and since then her Part B payments have been automatically deducted from her SS direct deposits. Prior to that we have paid her Part B through auto-withdrawal. Her very last automatic payment was in December 2025, for $202.90

My hunch is that, since Part B is paid in advance the December '25 auto-withdrawal was for January '26, which doubled-up the deduction from DW's 1st SS payment. Is that correct? If so, that was quite a fast refund! There's no mention on her ssa.gov account to date.

That sounds right to me too.

Yes, SSA is very prompt in refunding the overpaid Part B premium. They were for me as well.

I received that check yesterday as well….for a slightly different amount. My DW is always suspicious if the IRS is sending US money. I mobile deposited it and then looked up after to confirm the same thing. I got my first SS payment in January’26 as well. Glad you confirmed this.

If it's an error, they'll let you know!

Same thing happened to me when I recently started SS. In fact, I got the check, $185 in my case, before my SS started. I just deposited it. I figure that if it was a mistake on their part that that will chase me for it some day.

My check arrived today ($370). Prior to starting social security in January, I paid my Medicare premiums quarterly, so they refunded me two months' worth of overpayments.

Thanks for the post. I got a deposit for $202.90 about a week before my first SS payment. I didn't catch that amount matched my part B. Now I understand it was return of my last Medicare payment. Mine says from SS not IRS.
