I am age 65....my wife is 61. I am planning to take SS at age 70. If my wife takes her social security benefit at 62....at age 70 when I start my benefits would her benefit change to 50% of my FRA benefit....or does she have to continue with her benefit until I die at which time she could claim 50% of my benefit? Thanks for your feedback.

Is her full retirement age benefit based on her work record less than 50% of yours?

If not, then she would get her benefit, but discounted if she starts benefits before her FRA.

If her benefit is less than 50% of yours, then she'll get hers based on her own work record, discounted for an early start... until you file. When you file she'll get an additional amount for the excess of 50% of your PIA over her PIA.

If you pass before her, her benefit goes away and she gets 100% of the benefit that you were receiving.
