sold two items on Facebook Marketplace today

Never.

Scams on ebay are exceedingly rare. Social media makes you think it's happening constantly but that's because you only hear when someone has a bad experience. You don't hear about the tens of millions of smooth transactions that happen every day. Plus, in my ebay seller groups, when someone posts complaining about a "scam", most of the time it turns out to be seller (or buyer) error. Lots of sellers truly have no clue what they're doing and call everything a scam or a glitch when it's usually just user error. Same for buyers. Many don't bother to read the description or look at all of the pictures or check the seller's terms and policies and then scream "scam" when something goes wrong that was very clearly spelled out in the listing.

ebay has great protections in place for both buyers and sellers. It's pretty hard to get ripped off on ebay unless you don't follow the rules.
The biggest way that a buyer can scam you from what I have read is that they file a INAD and then you the seller have to pay for the shipping back to you. And they may not even send the same item but a broken one of the one they bought from you.

That's why I said it's an annoyance. It's not a deal breaker. It certainly doesn't stop me from selling there. But the number of people who send the "is this available?" message and you never hear from them again is ridiculous. I don't know what joy they get from doing that? It's not unusual for me to get a couple dozen of those messages on a single listing before I finally get someone who actually buys it.
Some people have theorize that they use it as a way to bookmark / save your listing.
Or they clicked the button by mistake.

Someone recently tried to scam my wife, but I knew it was fake when the alleged Zelle payment confirmation was from a gmail account. Next time, it will be posted as cash only.

cd : O)

Every one of my FBMP listings includes this:

CASH ONLY
LOCAL PICKUP ONLY (with my zip code)
FACEBOOK MESSAGING ONLY

That steers away the Venmo and Zelle scammers, the people who think I'm going to deliver their $10 item, and the folks who want me to text them anything.

As for pickup, I tell them to message me when they are ready to come to get the address. Prior to that, I just give them an approximate location (nearby Ford dealer).

If you meet the criteria, you can give a partial refund of up to 50% off if the item isn't returned in the same condition you sent it.

Much of the time that buyers file false INAD claims it is because the seller has a "no returns" policy so that's the only way for the buyer to get their money back. If all sellers had good return policies, INADs wouldn't happen nearly as much. I really wish ebay would force the issue and require sellers to accept returns. They recently made that the policy in the auto parts and accessories category and I'm hoping that is a pilot program that will spread to all categories at some point. Seriously, who wants to buy something from a stranger on the internet knowing that they have no recourse if they aren't happy with the item? I sure don't.

I used to post on Craigs List and now post exclusively on NextDoor because people are more responsive. I've never encountered scammers or no shows, but I mostly give stuff away for free. When I do sell something for money, I meet in the building parking lot and only accept cash. My sister posts on FB Marketplace and there are so many responses and so few actual interested parties. I usually get rid of my stuff the same or next day. It takes her 2-3 days on average to find a real buyer.

This is exactly my process for using market place. Cash only clears most of the scammers. The rest is just to handle unrealistic or rude people that want to jerk you around. Sorry, at this stage in my life, if it’s not a simple transaction, I have no interest. I also meet at a local restaurant. Not interested in people coming by the house. I tell them to message me when they’re there. I’m literally 1 minute away. It’s a restaurant attached to our condo complex.

Were you approached by scammers? They infest FBM, from what I have read, offering to pay in advance as an example for how they, as buyers, try to get you, the seller, to send them money.
Sold two cars on Marketplace the last few years. You would no believe the BS I had to put up with. Scammers and low life's.

And then there are the very occasional folks who reach out, say they are interested, set up a time, show up as scheduled, and then try haggling on site. Nope. Sorry, but if you didn't want to pay full price, you needed to have that conversation in advance. I waited for you based on the agreed upon price. I am more than happy to haggle. I do it all the time on ebay and FBMP, but it's done before the deal is finalized, not after.
So the buyer needs to haggle before seeing the item? or based on pictures and descriptions? Sold a few cars back when and would have people call and offer silly reductions in my price before seeing the car. That didn't sit right with me.

Yes, exactly. I"m not talking about cars. I'm talking about simple items, not things that need close examination or test drives. Just the same as the Best Offer feature on ebay. Potential buyers can send me an offer for less than my list price which I can accept or send a counter offer. They can't buy the item and then try to negotiate the price.

I'm an experienced detail-oriented seller. I don't post just one mediocre photo. I show the item from every angle, well lit, cropped tightly, and crystal clear, and I write a detailed description including pointing out any issues with condition. You can tell exactly what you're getting.

I've had plenty of people make an offer when they messaged me, and I've accepted most of them or met in the middle a few times. That's how it should work.

I'm glad this thread got bumped up. I did some work in my garage the other day and came across a brand new golf bag that we won in a drawing at our local liquor store. I planned to sell it all along and just never did, so I took it outside and took pictures and listed it on FBMP. Yesterday morning someone messaged about it and he came about 1:30pm to get it. $65 in my pocket and one less thing in the garage.

Craigslist is a cesspool.
Facebook Marketplace is Ok in comparison.
I buy and sell a lot on Craig's List in the past. I had good experiences. Lately I am more of a seller and I take the business to the Nextdoor site. Usually I offer the item for free but had too many no-shows; so I place a small nominal value (e.g. $10) to the item and it's usually gone in a couple hours. Further, I found a lot of scams on Facebook. I always had good luck with Ebay for big ticket items.

I’m in the market for a bike- what do you have?
2009 Suzuki DR 650 with 14500 miles, basically 1 owner. Have a guy coming by today thats very interested. Also have a 2011 Road King Classic but the wife wont let me sell it.

Nice bike, very sellable and I’m surprised you had a problem selling. Too heavy for what I’m looking for. I’m looking for a reasonably priced 2-3 year old Beta RS 500. Hard to find! Good luck with the sale.

I had problems with FB Marketplace. Got tons of lowball offers, but of 36 or so replies only 3 seemed local and interested.

If it's cost-effective I'll sell things on e-Bay. Otherwise I list items as Free Stuff on Craigslist. My first venture on Craigslist was a couple of button collections belonging to my late mothers-in-law. I got multiple e-mails from people begging me to hold them aside because they wanted them!

I live alone and don't want people coming to the door so I put the item(s) at the end of the driveway. I've found that when I list items separately the first to arrive usually takes everything but I use that to my advantage and put out smaller, inexpensive items that no one would make a special trip to get- and they disappear, too. Ornamental glassware seems to be an exception. No one wants that! No takers for my ancient cross-country ski equipment, either. Well, I'll take it all to the retirement community and see how it works on their walking path during the winter. If I use it frequently maybe I'll BTD and buy new stuff.

I no longer accept requests to hold an item aside for people- too many no-shows.

If you sell on marketplace and make a profit, be sure to include that in your taxes. Uncle Sam needs his cut.

Yes, all income is reportable. ebay, Craigslist, Facebook, whatever. It all gets reported. That doesn't mean you'll owe any taxes if you were just selling off personal items for less than you paid, but it's all reportable.

Our SIL had a gun put to his head in a busy area, 7 lanes of rush hour traffic, broad daylight. He was selling a nintendo on FB Marketplace. Needless to say, he didn't get the $300, but fortunately, he is still alive.

Wow, he is lucky! This is a real possibility selling stuff. A kid in CT was selling his Mustang, two guys came to look at it and test drive, while out testing driving it, they killed the kid, dumped his body and off they went. You need to be careful

Extremely lucky, a 5 year old and 7 year old, and a young wife. Could have been tragic for sure

But the number of people who send the "is this available?" message and you never hear from them again is ridiculous.
I am no longer on FB but when I was using FBM, I would state in the ad that anyone who was interested should PM me. Any ""Is this still available?" messages were completely ignored. If someone has any level of serious interest, they will take the trouble to message, and perhaps also ask a question about the item. If they can't be bothered to do that, then I cannot be bothered to waste my time replying to a generic "Is this still available?" message,

I put this in my ads; they still ask. I just sold an ebike after having it listed since December. It was clearly described with model number and year, but I got asked how old, was it still in warranty, and how much power it had (which was the only detail not in the ad).

I’ve sold things over the years on eBay, FB, CL. They all take a certain amount of effort. They all have a certain annoyance factor. It’s what you put up with to get the cash.
We’ve sold over $100,000 on eBay. A fraction of that on all the other sites. For us, it’s worth the annoyances.
If it was easy, everyone would do it.
