According to the Pew Research Center, 32% of American adults have at least one tattoo.
38% of women, 27% of men.
There are no major differences by political party or whether Americans live in an urban, suburban or rural community.

Not many in my age group, but it's interesting that 22% have more than one. Based on what I see on the street, I think this is a very accurate result.

My father got a tattoo on his forearm as a young sailor. It was an image of a young woman in her lingerie. By the time he died, it was just a large purple blob. Of his three children, only my sister has a tattoo - a very small one, usually hidden. My brother and I, who also were both in the Navy, have no tattoos. I don't know with certainty about my 30-something nephews and niece, but I've never seen one on them.

I appreciate an artistic and well executed tattoo, but never wanted one for myself.

One of life's mysteries to me. Why in the world would anyone want one (or more) I've never been drunk enough.
Yeah. I view it as indicating an inability to do long-range planning. All these cute young things will eventually be neither cute nor young, but the purple blotches will still be there.

If they want to do it, it's none of my business but it is sad to think about how they will probably feel a few decades from now.

My father got a USN style tattoo on his left forearm after his tour of combat in the south Pacific. I guess he got in in Hawaii where they stopped and refueled his ship, etc. I never asked about his war participation.

I have no tat's. My daughter has a couple in discrete places. My dog has none.

I'll always remember the laugh I got in some town in Ireland a few years ago.
There was a tattoo parlor with a tattoo removal place upstairs. They both had big signs advertising their respective services.

None here, and at 69, no plans to get any.

DW once contemplated a small rose on her ankle, but heard that area hurt like hell for a tattoo.

I do see a lot of the 40 something kids of our friends, both gals and guys, with several, and a lot of them quite large (arms, abdomen, chest, side).

They don't bother me unless they are on the face, or cover an entire appendage (arm, leg). And then, my only comment is "what were you thinking".

Zero here. I do see that GenZ's having really taken this up, whereas Millennials made them far more mainstream.

I have thought about "permanent makeup," which I believe is a tatoo. The only thing I would consider would be permanent makeup eyebrows, as mine have mostly disappeared, and it make SUCH a difference in appearance to have eyebrows. However, I've discovered a good eyebrow pencil, and I'll just use that. Much easier.

Heh. Remember some joke about face or neck tattoos being unemployment assurance. Costco employees would have visible tattoos covered with a band-aid or something; now they are out for all to see.

Never got one - thought if I became an international spy or went into a life of crime the ready identifier would be a bad idea. Didn't have anything I knew I'd want drawn on my skin forever.

Niece has alopecia and has worn some temporary tattoo eyebrows that are amazingly realistic. Like from closeup viewing the individual hairs are perfect. Don't know if this is the company, but this type of thing:

I tease my wife every time we pass a tattoo parlor that we should get matching tattoos. Of course we never have, either of us, gotten a tattoo. I just do not see the point as my taste in things change and every idea is preceded with a better one later but would be stuck with the one I chose.
Another thing I'd never do is get anything pierced. When my boys were growing up and living here, I told them they could get anything pierced, only that I get to do the piercing. Then showed them the nail, hammer and a board. Neither has one to date. Ha!

Yes, my wife has a friend with that permanent eyebrow method, and it really looks pretty good.

Reminds me of the old saying...'more tatoos than teeth'.

Years ago our teen daughter kept threatening us that she was going to get a tatoo.

We both nodded and said go ahead.

Not the answer she was looking for. She did not get a tatoo.

Thank goodness. I think they look awful but each to their own. Not my business what anyone else does.

I've been noticing lately how rare non-tattooed men 40+ seem to be. . . and I'm talking whole arms and both calves - not 1 or 2.

I almost half considered it for a second but nah. Risk of infection from the ink and really I do not like people (introvert) and I don't want anyone to ask me about them . . .

I notice women around here do more weird hair colors - green and purple seem to be hot.

I'm seeing more and more seniors with new tattoos now - a sure sign that the whole idea has probably jumped the shark. :p

You are supposed to be "Happy, Wild, and Free" in retirement (I just read the book) so a tattoo may be in order to be a bit on the wild side. So I wonder where one should be put on your body at this stage of the game?
