Well Mr Huawei tablet c.7/2018 is finally non-working for a major app (to me anyway). Fidelity asked for an update but the only option was to uninstall it & then the message it was not compatible. Knew it was coming as one other didn't update last year.

Probably a Huawei thing as they've been suspect for years since the gubmint labeled them a risk to security and spying.

Time to BTD... Any recommendations for an 8" non-Apple tablet? I value speed and pic quality...

Any particular reason you have excluded Apple?

I'm an Android guy. I know their's is a good product, just rather use android. I've been looking for an 8"-ish but not many good ones out there. Maybe I should give Apple a try. It's mostly for browsing and video, no games...

If you’re willing to try an iPad, I think you’d be very satisfied. I’m no fan boy but have always like the Apple line up. I have one iPad that’s probably 10 years old and it still works just fine. My grand daughter uses it. Of course it won’t handle some new apps, but physically, it’s working fine. For your stated purpose of surfing and video watching, I’m sure you’d be happy with it.

I’m not an android user, but I do like my Samsung TV’s and my daughter likes the Samsung phones so if I was looking for an android tablet, I’d probably start by looking at a Samsung.

My DW and I have always liked our Samsung tablets. They have many different price points.

My latest tablet is a SamsungTAB A7 Lite that I have been more than happy with, forgot when I got it, came from Costco a couple of years ago I think. It replaced another Samsung tablet.

We have 4 Samsung tablets in the house, one per person. My guess is we have had 8 Samsung tablets in the house over the years.

As others have noted Apple is a fine product too. My work phone is Apple so have little experience with that eco system.

We are all in the Andriod eco system for now anyway, setting up a new device is rather simple by default. Not that flipping the switch to Apple would be much trouble I don't think.

When you say pic quality do you mean a great camera? Or do you mean the screen has great picture quality?

Because almost certainly you're not going to get a camera in a tablet anywhere near as good as a phone camera.

I run Fidelity on an iPad both the app and the website without issues.

Ya gotta love this site. The OP says he's looking for a non-Apple tablet. In his next post he says he's an Android guy and would rather use Android.

Yet, here are two recommendations for an Apple iPad!

Unless you are getting something that has native android I'd look at the cheapest Kindle Fire avaiable and then junk it when it stops getting security patches. But there may be something with native Android available. The OEM versions will deprecate quickly or updates will be lagged.

No, avoid the Kindle Fire because it can't run most Android apps. You have a nice tablet for reading Kindle books and shopping on Amazon, but that's about it. The apps that they do run are very rudimentary, mostly kiddie games. They do not have very high quality screens and forget about taking a decent picture with them.

An iPad is a much better choice. Higher quality screens, components and a better OS that's updated once a year.

Did you read post #3? Sorta changes the direction and hence why Apple comes up.

Did you also read post #3 before posting a condescending remark.
If you notice, I removed my post after you pointed out post #3. I still think what I wrote is true, but it was not appropriate. That is why I deleted it. If I offended you, I apologize.

I did see that he said, "Maybe I should try Apple." I also saw that he currently has an Android tablet, that he wants a non-Apple tablet and that he is an Android guy. I put him firmly in the Android camp. But I do see the opening that you pounced on.

Yeah, meant screen resolution... My current one is 2560 x 1600...

then I would look at Google's offering. At least the updates will be timely. Maybe they have improved the hardware. I had two of their Nexus tabs and they both had hardware failures. I've dumped Android but if I had to go back, I'd look at Google for tab and phone.

I went through this process of finding/buying a new Android tablet a couple of years ago. I ended up doing something crazy and buying a Blackview Android tablet from AliExpress. IIRC, I paid less than $150 for it. I am completely satisfied with it and it's still going strong. It's stuck on Android 12, but it's never been an issue for me--yet.

Two minor quibbles--the facial recognition feature doesn't always work on first try. I've since learned the tablet needs decent ambient light for it to work reliably (ie. not in bed in a darkened room, LOL.) Also, very rarely, when watching YouTube videos the unit suddenly does a soft power down. Screen goes black and unit powers down. This only happens with YouTube, only in landscape mode, and pressing the power button resumes the video at the same spot where the tablet shut down. Annoying when it happens but not a deal breaker.

I've since learned they are available on Amazon. You might want to take a look.

If I were shopping Android tablets nowadays, I'd probably wait for the Pixel tablet to go on sale.

Yep! This group always speaks its mind and gives its opinions - whether you want them or not.

Tons of web sites for comparing/reviewing android tablets.

Don't know why you'd care about opinions from a few people on a FIRE web site.

Gotta start somewhere. Besides many websites are paid for their "expert" opinions.
I agree. I value the opinions of people here generally and there’s some people here that are very knowledgeable on various subjects. Getting the opinion from someone who you can trust about whether or not they have first hand experience is a significant benefit in my opinion.
