Too Old to Buy a Bigger Home?

Do it. It's now or never. We bought a 5600 square foot home when I was 60 and we thoroughly enjoy it every day.
This is such a personal decision. DW and I have said for years after several moves "we want to downsize" but never seem to like smaller is better. We just sold our 5000 sq ft home to a nice couple (he 80 she 68). We then bought a $7K sq ft home (so much for downsizing), We live 1 miles from 5 grandkids so the pool/playroom/extra bedrooms get used. DW and I will never need all the space but it's great to have it if u can afford it. Yes, it cost more to maintain but I'll hire all that out. If the house is in good shape the cost has not been much more. It is a 3 story home but when it's just us we stay on the main level. When I can't do the stairs and the grands don't desire to visit then I'll go small. For me that is 10 years away and DW is 8 years younger. Worst thing is we need to yell from room to room!!.

I think it is an issue of vibrancy and health rather than age. We bought our first snowbird condo in 2007 and then we upgraded to our current one in 2019. We never asked for anyone to approve it!

A house-purchase is a testament to staying put and feeling settled. If one has sincere and profound affinity for the locale and neighborhood, then it makes sense to "upgrade", even if the financials aren't optimal or guaranteed. Speaking personally, I am reluctant to buy, because I have no idea where I'll be, or why, or for how long. But if the OP has securely answered these questions, then the rest swiftly follows!
