In the spirit of "Live Strong" this winter Gary Charpentier is scootering to and from his job every weekday, riding fifty miles across the snowy frigid heart of Minneapolis and St Paul. A daily blog chronicling the adventurous experience can be read at http://www.ridetowork.org/blog/

With the recent gasoline price increases, and concerns about Peak Oil, scooters have enjoyed a renaissance in popularity. Explaining one motive for “The Baron in Winter” commute blog, Gary stated, “Ever since getting out of the Marines, I’ve missed the challenges which were a part of everyday life in the Corps, and I get bored easily with the same old routines of the 9 to 5 grind.” In addition to this new blog, he also writes a regular column in Minnesota Motorcycle Monthly, and has been published in a variety of other monthly magazines.

Combine a typical Minnesota winter, a complicated commute, a bored Marine, and a motor scooter -- and the result is a daily blog of unusual interest.

Usually that adds up to a recipe for disaster. Wish I had a nickel for every time I've read that phrase in the Naval Safety Center's message traffic.

Sounds like he needs to investigate the USMC Reserves.

I bike here in the Minne in winter on the bike trails if the temp gets over 35 and there is no snow or ice, just bundle up real good, its invigorating, but to do it everyday when it gets -20 with wind and ice on the roads is pretty hardcore and I tip my hat in admiration to this dude, even if he is motorized. I see others that are committed to pedal to work here no matter what the weather. I did it most everyday in SF Bay area and I thought I was toughing it then, but winter biking here everyday should qualify for an extreme sport category.
