The Treasury Department was hacked by a Chinese state-sponsored actor via a third-party software service provider, according to The New York Times. The software firm, BeyondTrust, notified the Treasury Department on Dec. 8 that hackers accessed government employee workstations and unclassified documents, according to a letter sent to lawmakers. The Treasury Department said it's working with the FBI and intelligence services to assess the impact of the breach. The latest cyberattack follows recent disclosures that a China-linked hacking group infiltrated up to nine U.S. telecommunications companies. China has denied involvement in both incidents.
