Getting to the holiday cram season.... We dug out the boxes of Christmas stuff that the DW has promised to go through for the Umpteenth year... Got the outside lights hung, fake tree up... In prep for the 1st wave I have been busy with getting the turkey into the brine to smoke Thursday, roasting Pumkin for the GS to make pies and DW is working on a cherry bourbon sauce for the ham she's baking.
Hoping Street will send me some bread......
What's y'all's plan of attack?

Since I now live in an apartment, I will go to DD's house for the T Day event. Otherwise, just watch sports on TV and walk my dog.

We will be going to my Brothers house for the family gathering... Ma is the leader, 6 kids and spouses, 9 grands some with spouses and 6 great grands...

I'm going to try and make own pumpkin pie. Not from scratch but not store bought either.

I wanted to get one store bought as backup in case I do a terrible job. But didn't see any pre-made available.

Do you have a Costco near you! They have tons of pies!
There's a Whole Foods nearby. I didn't go there though.

I'm going try making own and hope it isn't a total bust.

Thanksgiving is at our house this year. DD’s will be bringing some things so that lightens the load. I’m in charge of the turkey, dressing and gravy. I also just made the cranberry sauce. There’s not much you can do ahead of time, but the cranberry sauce is one. The other thing I’m doing early is the gravy. I’m going to roast the neck and some vegetables as the base for the gravy and make that tomorrow.

As for the turkey, I’m going to try something a bit different. I’m going to break it down into pieces (breast, thigh, drum sticks and wings) and cook them on my grill - basically like a big chicken. I got a Butterball so no brining but I’ll spice it up and throw it on the grill.

I’ll make the dressing on Thursday and try to get that timed to come out of the oven just in time for dinner.

DD’s are bringing mashed and sweet potatoes along with a veggie tray and some deviled eggs. DW is going to make some green beans that we canned using some bacon grease and bacon bits for flavor.

It will be busy the next few days but I think we’ll do fine. There will be ten of us in total so not too big of a gathering. Wishing everyone a good next few days as the busyness of the holidays kicks into gear.

The last few years DW has "helped" the GS with taking a pumpkin from round shell to a round pie..
He wont eat a store bought one. the old skills are the best lessons.

This is our third year since moving in to the new-to-us house, and each of those Thanksgivings we have spent at friends' homes because we didn't feel we had our act together here yet. This year we are finally doing our own Thanksgiving dinner, cooking a turkey on the Weber, and it's currently in the brine. We lived in a condo for years, planning to live in a regular single-family house someday and do all that backyard stuff that people do. This summer I used that darned Weber nearly every day.

I'm rooting for you! Read some recipes, watch you youtube instructional video's. The crust is arguably the hardest part. Make sure to preheat your oven!

You'll be fine, it will be great.

I find that it’s hard to go wrong with home made. At the end of day you’re putting things like butter, sugar, flour and eggs together. It may not look good but it’s almost sure to taste good.

Small gathering this year. Our daughter is in Denver and won't be coming home with her fiancé. First year since my Dad passed. My brother will join us and my sister will be with the family of her sons new girlfriend. He and her are moving, also to Denver, in January.

We don't really like turkey either so I'm going to try to elevate it by butchering a bird and picking the meat from the thighs, legs and wings, and griding that so I can make turkey meatballs. Instead of regular bread crumbs I'll use stuffing mix. I'll roast the bones to make stock and gravy. The breast meat will be used later for cutlets or for a turkey pot pie.

Turkey meatballs, mashed potato's, Hollenbeck butternut squash, perhaps some corn. Pretty simple.

I'm going to make a pecan pie and we'll also have Italian flag or "rainbow" cookies my wife bakes.

I'm cheating. Got one of those pie crust packages and the pumpkin mix is from can.

Pie crust, can pumpkin mix, evaporated milk, 7 inch pie pan, will use bake setting in air fryer.

What can go wrong?

Want to serve hot apple cider but damn if I can find anything at the grocery store to serve it in. What do people do, use a small crock pot and ladle? This shouldn't be so hard lol.

That's exactly what we did one year. You could also use a thermos or similar coffee dispenser, or a small pot over a sterno burner.

That's what I've used before. It works out really well. I buy disposable cups so people can have cider or coffee.

We’re not having Turkey, ha ha. Grilled lamb loin chops instead.

Not getting together with anyone either. We’re busy getting ready for a trip.

My family is coming to my house on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. My sister and I are going to pick up an already prepared turkey dinner etc on Friday. We did this last year and it worked out really well.
On Thanksgiving my sisters and I are going to my grandsons mother's (son's former wife) house. My younger sister won't be here for the Saturday dinner so we are crashing former DIL Thanksgiving. Which worked out really really well for all. I'm getting an all ready cooked turkey delivered tomorrow and I will reheat in my instant pot. They were going to just have ham but my grandson really wanted turkey so we shall have turkey and ham.

DH does the majority of the cooking and cooks for the holidays. It's a sacrifice on my part of course, but I'm very kind hearted and I'll put up with it. We are hosting Thanksgiving and then leaving very early Friday morning to visit the grands so the meal with be smaller than usual but will include turkey, (Greek) "stuffing," Greek salad, spanakopita, sweet potatoes, a steamed vegetable (to be determined), homemade cheese cake, and various bakery treats.
