We adopted two 4 month-old female kittens the end of February. Now approaching seven months old, they are full of energy, and they are especially fond of toys that roll or slide over the vinyl luxury flooring that covers the entry, hallways, family room, kitchen, and dining area. The plastic spring in the photo below (courtesy of Amazon) is their favorite:

Over the course of a day or two, these toys will start to disappear. We started out with four of them on the floor. Usually a search of the house, sometimes under furniture, sometimes behind the door to the pantry or coat closet, will locate any missing springs. I pretty much had determined all of the places where the springs could end up.

A week ago, one of the springs disappeared, and I could not find it. There are two other hard toys that disappeared a couple of weeks ago that are still missing. Yesterday, a 2nd spring disappeared that once again I could not find. Earlier today, a 3rd spring disappeared that I could not find either, despite searching the entire house. That left one spring that I had located.

After searching the house this evening after dinner, I decided to take a shower. After the shower, I was walking out of the bathroom, and there on the floor was a spring. Well, they must have moved the one from the vinyl flooring to that spot, I thought. Nope. In the middle of the family room was spring #2. I decided to place both near the kitchen island and went to the computer room.

About ten minutes later, I needed to talk to DW about something, and as I was heading to the master bedroom, I noticed a spring in the middle of the family room floor. Glancing over, I could see the two springs I had placed under the kitchen island, so this was spring #3.

I think our kittens are trying to make me go crazy. LOL! If spring #4 appears overnight ...

The hide and seek of cat toys will go on for their entire lives. They never get tired of playing with stuff like that. My 12-year old still enjoys a good toy toss now and then. Enjoy your kitties.

We adopted a kitten when I was 10. He loved the sound of marbles and would entertain himself by batting it around the kitchen floor. He then developed the habit of dropping a marble into my piano teacher's purse during my 30 minute lessons.

Heck, we have like 50 plastic balls in the house at different locations... when we move furniture or appliances we always find a few..

BTW, ours loved the scruncees (sp?) or hair rings... my DD lost many of them with the cats going into her room and taking them...

NOW, get a soda box or similar of 12 ounce cans... make an opening on both ends and watch!!! Ours will go in and we can carry it around all over the place.

Beautiful kitty! Yes, they love toys. I hide toys from my cat then put them out again later so hey, it’s an all new toy!

I loved to use the laser pointer for the kitties to chase. I also had several toys with laser beams that rotated and changed directions. Sadly both my kitties had the same mysterious ailments and were put down within a year of each other. I am highly allergic to cat dander so I am not to have anymore kitties. :(

Yes! One of our cats' toys will go missing for weeks, then show up in the middle of the floor. We've moved to an apartment and we still can't find where they hide the toys.

The plastic springs are a favorite with our cats, too :)

Are they hiding toys from each other or from you?
Yes! :ROFLMAO:

One of the kittens, the slightly older one (by about 3 weeks), likes to gather up toys and hide them. This was mentioned by the foster person in her write-up. She also mentioned that this kitten liked to place some of her toys in the water bowl. Both of these traits have been observed since we adopted her.

The younger kitten has more energy and will play with any and all toys in sight. I think that may be why the older kitten will occasionally hide the toys. The younger kitten is also the one more likely to knock a toy under furniture, a bed, or a closed door to the pantry or coat closet.

I haven't figured out yet who is dropping these springs into my laundry basket.

I recommend milk carton rings if you drink milk. Some of my former kitties favorite things.
You can purchase all of the toys in the world, and many times cats will play with something that wasn't purchased specifically as a toy. Paper bags (handles removed) were favorites of our previous cats.

One day several weeks ago, DW received an order from Amazon. Inside the shipping box was some plain brown paper used as packing material. It was about 20' long, so she cut it roughly in half. She crumpled up both sections and placed them on the vinyl flooring. The kittens immediately started playing with them, sliding around on top, jumping under and over the paper, or playing a "stalking" game with each other.

A lot of the time they will combine the springs and another hard ring toy with the packing paper. The paper becomes an "obstacle" to get through to reach the toys. Sometimes, these toys are empty toilet paper rolls, another freebie toy our kittens like.

They especially like it when I slide the various toys across the floor into the paper. They like the crumpled packing paper so much that we purchased a roll on Amazon for replacements, as they wear out the paper after a couple of weeks.

Just curious... is this a rag doll? Looks a little similar... if so they are really friendly...

My kitty thanks you for starting this thread. I remembered a toy that I had put away for a while. I just got it out and she is happily playing with it.

What a beautiful kitty! I had a few cats in my life as a child but unfortunately now I am so allergic I end up in the ER so I haven’t had one for decades. I do have two little naughty dogs for company, however.

My best HS buddy had a cat who would take a marble in her mouth and carry it up the stairs. She would then bat the marble, making it roll down the stairs. She would chase the marble to the bottom. She would then pick up the marble, repeat the process several times and then place the marble in "dad's" left slipper under the bed. I watched this two or three times over several months. Couldn't believe how the cat was so willing to entertain herself and do it in such an OCD way!

Ping-pong balls.

Light enough for them to easily swipe, then go chase.

Though they all seem to end up under furniture...

I can see that. In our case, the kittens seem to like "toys" that they can carry in their mouths. I woke up this morning with two toys next to my pillow that weren't there when I went to sleep last night. That said, something they can chase around the house is their next favorite.

Yesterday, they discovered a new toy: the flip-top caps to vitamin/supplement bottles. With the flip-top open, they will bat those around and carry them in their mouths throughout the house. The ones they are playing with have fairly long, solid hinges. Some of the flip-tops have flimsy hinges, and there is a concern they would snap those off, so those are recycled.

Ours love the same springs, and we occasionally have to check closed closet doors or under certain furniture and round up a bunch of them. Our cat who really goes nuts for them kind of short-circuited when we dumped all of them at once! (She wasn't running away, she chased one down the stairs.)

Mine loves those springs too. I'm glad you are enjoying your kitten's. Ours bring us so much love and happiness.

Life is so much better with cats.

One of my two cats loves those springs. If I am sitting at the computer, she will bring me one and drop it at my feet. I fling it from the office through the kitchen and into the dining room, while she chases it at top speed. When she catches it she bats it around like crazy and chases it from room to room. Eventually, she picks it up and brings it back to me so I can throw it again. Our fetching sessions go on until she gets tired.

Having hardwood floors helps greatly as it allows the spring to skitter across the floor easily. The only problem is that she often bats it under the furniture and I have to go recover it for her.

When our daughters were little we adopted a young cat who loved living toys. Our back yard included some heavy brush at the back with various critters. Often the cat would bring in a mouse which he would proudly display for us to get our attention. Then he would proceed to eat it head first showing just the tail at the end. He seemed bored with standard cat toys. Originally we had a few gophers in the back yard and I recall seeing him sitting by a hole waiting for what seemed like hours not moving a muscle. A few months later all the gophers were gone. He always came in at night to avoid the coyotes in the neighborhood.

DWs cat who lived at the business brought her a snake as a present. It was still quite alive. I wasn't there to deal with it so after copious shrieking from the female empl*yees, DW enlisted the help of the neighbor across the street. He put the snake in his garden.

Oh, that cat had a pinned leg and only one remaining eye. We at first thought to call her "Lucky." Somehow it didn't fit so we thought of another name.
