OK, looking at a BTD possibility....

We are going to travel to South America and on the return trip we are flying overnight... but when I looked at choosing seats they have an option for United Premium Plus...

Now, I looked on a seat chart on some website and it gave the same dimensions as a regular set but more leg room..

But, the United site says you get a wider seat...

Anybody know which is true? I would think United... and it is only $200 per person more which seems like a bargain to me...

I have flown United within the last year with Premium Plus and clearly had more legroom, but did not notice any seat width difference. Perhaps this is an upgraded option.

I would look at seatguru.com. I flew United back in 2017 and upgraded to their premium, but I forget the details. I remember that the seats were wider and more legroom, so it was a nice upgrade from standard economy.

$200 seems to be a deal for that length of flight. I’d jump on it

+1

United says Premium Plus is a wider seat and not the same as economy plus. Having flown more night flights to and from Latin America than I can (or care to) remember, more seat space is a big deal.

Great resource. Use it for every long-haul flight. If you're going to BTD on a premium seat, it's nice to know what seat you're supposed to get on your flight although it's no guarantee. The differences can be pretty dramatic. We flew in business class on a BA flight that had a 2/3/2 configuration and most recently in a 1/2/1. Big difference.

All you need for SeatGuru is airline/date/flight number.

Sadly seat guru has stopped updating seat maps in 2020. Seat maps.com seems to have taken it's place

what happened to Seat guru

there may be some glitches on seat maps.com. I just looked at Delta RT Portland-AMS. Delta passed the return leg to KLM about a month ago. Seat maps still shows the original DL flight

Ah, too bad!

Thanks for the heads-up. Seatguru still seemed accurate for recent flights I took, but I have noticed that for some flights they have no data. Now I know why.

I’ll have to take a look at seatmaps.

Thanks for the info... and the link...

Seatguru did not have the layout of the plane... it showed just a bit more pitch on a seat layout that United did not show... it seems the seats are a half inch wider, but have 7 inch more pitch and more recline...

I think it is a great BTD value...

Yeah, last time we flew we saw those seats just ahead of our section. Nearly as I could tell, they ARE wider. But Eco Plus is good enough for me for now. I assume the $200 extra (that someone mentioned) is over and above the Eco Plus charge. So - approaching $500 above cattle car in some cases.

I was recently upgraded to a United Premium seat on a flight home from London to EWR. It was a very nice compromise between the masochism of regular economy and the huge price hike of Polaris business class.

The seats are in pairs (i.e. window/aisle). They have two foot rests, one that's integrated and moves with the seat, and another fixed just above the "personal item" area under the seat in front of you. The seats recline more deeply. They have upgraded material and padding, and they are indeed wider with full armrests that aren't shared with the person next to you.

Upgraded food and alcohol are included. The entertainment display is larger.

For an international flight where you don't need lie-flat sleeping, it's a great option.

No... eco plus are anywhere from $129 to $179... these are only $200 more...

DW wants to get the front ones... with LOTS of leg room... but close to a bathroom... but it looks like business class only so might not be bad...

On that particular flight and plane, the delta in width is only 0.5" vs. regular economy but compared to some other craft in their fleet, which are at a tight 17 to 17.3", the 19" will be noticeable (along with the increased pitch and recline). There may be even more shoulder room. (There are some aircraft/lines where the premium product only has a couple more inches of pitch and an 18" wide seat).

It pays to understand what you are buying. Our experience in the past is that the seats are not wider. But more legroom....sometimes only 1 inch so you need to check. We are not tall so paying for an extra one inch or is not in the cards. It is why we always try to find out exactly what the delta is before buying a pig in a poke. We seldom eat on the plane so any ugrade there is of no value to us.

I suspect that it may also depend on the equipment...what type of plane you are on.

On Transat (Canadian carrier) we will not pay for premium/Business. What we happily pay for is bulkhead seats beside an exit row. Regular seats but massive amount of leg room.

We paid for premium was on TAP to Portugal last year. It was a bargain. There was a big difference from economy. We know...because we had regular economy on the connecting fight from Lisbon-Madiera.

Apparently what you pay is dependent upon where you are flying and when. We just booked our return to the Islands next month and we forked over an extra (approx.) $250 each for our Eco-plus seats. We didn't even consider the Eco-premium seats since we're reasonably satisfied in the Eco-plus from previous trips. I recall prices like you mention on previous trips, but apparently the airlines can now sell our particular travel "experience" for more than we used to pay.

Yeah - we're gonna BTD!!
