Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) - 2021 version

In other news, Max is now available with ads for $2.99/month for six months for people who can live with the ads.
I grabbed that one. I also grabbed the Hulu with ads deal. I actually prefer ads. My physical therapist says I should change position at least every 20 minutes. The ads remind me to get up and move.

YouTube TV base plan is increasing $10 to $82.99. Effective the next bill on or after 1/13/25 for most current subscribers. For those currently subscribed through a third party, the increase is effective on or after 2/13/25. New subscribers can get 10 days free, then $60/mo for 3 months before the new rate starts.

Warner Brothers Discovery announced they will separate the streaming and linear networks into separate businesses in 2025. (See here)
Warner Bros. Discovery is reorganizing its business into two separate units: one for linear networks, and the other for streaming and studios business. The move, which is set to be complete by mid-2025, is meant to help the company “pursue further value creation,” potentially bringing it closer to breaking off its linear business entirely.
Not really a surprise, this is what other media businesses have done. What that means is viewers with Max or HBO subscriptions currently have free access to the Max streaming platform but that will go away.

I have a question about the Discovery Plus streaming service. Back in its initial days, there were some new episodes that only appeared on Discovery Plus, while others would only appear on Discovery's live TV channels. At a much later date, they would appear on the other platform (streaming <-> live TV). Is this still the case?

Side note: We've been on Sling Blue since March 2023. This evening, my wife went to the DVR to manage some recordings. Their DVR menu indicates we have almost 28 hours of recordings, but there are only two recordings listed, both for one hour each. The remaining recordings are either hidden or have been lost, yet their cloud DVR says we have 26 hours used for something we can't see. It's been reported to Sling, but I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this?

Did you accidentally create a second profile? Each profile will show total hours used/remaining space available. But, it only displays the recordings made under that specific profile (kids can't see parent's recordings). Select the profile icon in the top left corner and see if more than one is listed.

It's been 2 weeks since we cancelled cable and we haven't missed it at all.

We still have Amazon Prime and Netflix and it looks like they will be more than enough.

Nope. No extra profiles other than the two we've had with Sling for well over a year, and the other profile has no recordings.

I checked the Sling DVR this morning, and all of my wife's recordings were there. The DVR usage percentage hadn't changed since last night. The recordings, which were taking up the DVR space, had magically reappeared this morning. It's a bit disconcerting that the recordings can "disappear" like that.

YouTube TV raised prices, the second year in a row of price increases of around $10 a month.

Thing is, their price is national, even though costs in some markets are higher than others, largely due to regional sports channels, which air local NBA, NHL and MLB games.

Cable TV is always increasing prices for access to sport channels and one reason is when you have huge salaries signed by players, which probably leads to TV sports rights fees increasing.

The main sports leagues are signing bigger TV rights deals but on a local level, you have something like the NY Mets signing Juan Soto to an almost $800 million contract.

So it would make sense that customers in NYC would have higher costs but what if you live in Cincinnati or even a city without MLB? Why would the YouTube TV subscription cost the same in say Birmingham, Alabama, which doesn’t have any pro sports teams, as in NYC?

I would imagine cable TV subscriptions in NYC cost substantially more than in Birmingham. Is YouTube TV in effect making smaller market subscribers subsidize those in bigger markets?

For those that may cancel YTTV due to the increase you get an additional 6 months at the old $72 rate in an attempt to keep you when going through the cancellation process. I was canceling anyway with college football almost over. I’m going to use the money saved on upgrading my streaming services to ad free. Next Fall I will probably just use Sling Orange as it has most of what I need. That is if I still have any interest in college football. The NIL and portal has pretty much dampened my enthusiasm for the sport.

Did anyone sign up for the free weekend with Appletv+? I did on Friday, watched 4 episodes of Ted Lasso & then it quit working. Now I can't even log in to cancel my subscription. I have a request in to their help desk. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Update - got an email from apple that I could log into my account now. Nothing happens when I click on the profile but I found my way to instructions to cancel & got a bit further - got my user name & password accepted, got a code sent to my email, entered that, then got a code sent to my phone, entered that, entered the security code on the credit card I used when I signed up, but then it takes me to a page with info on their privacy / security policies & when I click the Continue button nothing happens, can't go any further. Does anyone have a phone number to apple? Worst streaming service I've ever tried!

Sooo, got my new Samsung and it has its own 'network'... I am really surprised that I can stream a LOT of content, including local stations...

I do not see how I can record them, but hope that is an option as I would get rid of DISH...

I've seen that. It looks kind of looks like the Pluto TV line-up.

I have a favor to ask of Discovery+ subscribers. When in the system, can you see any listings for the History Channel? We are not subscribers of Discovery+ (yet), but when I look at Discovery+'s website on my PC and on DW's tablet, the History Channel is blank. No shows are listed. I am trying to figure out what is happening here.

I'm interested in hearing about this too - if all History Channel content were available through D+, then I would seriously consider subscribing

There’s nothing listed in History nor A&E on the app. I have to admit I don’t usually watch those channels, but they are grayed out (as in no shows listed).

Discovery+ did not renew the broadcast rights for History channel and some other A&E content, according to a Redditor's chat with Discovery.

I had Discovery Plus 3 years ago and they didn't have History. So I dropped it. Sounds like they added some content since then, and then dropped it recently again.

It has been a tenuous relationship through the years.

I used to only watch "Curse of Oak Island," but after realizing that show is going nowhere and is nothing but a basic scam now, I don't miss it.

As you know, I like the free "FAST" service, PlutoTV. Their history channel is pretty good with a lot of real history shows, versus the fluff stuff, although they have a little of that.

Of course, being free, the content tends to be a bit aged, and produced mostly in Canada and overseas. Not a problem, and maybe refreshing to get a different perspective.

I guess they never found the treasure, only a few coins. Good try though!

Some History Channel content is available on Hulu. History Vault is also a standalone subscription option,

That was the explanation I was given by Discovery+. I find this a bit confusing. Discovery (well, WB-Discovery) owns the History Channel and Discovery+. This explanation gives the appearances of having one part of WBD give the middle finger to another. Disappointing, but it kind of explains why WBD is messed up right now.

We’re still trying to understand how Disney’s Hulu+Live - Fubo merger will play out? It appears Disney will launch a sports streaming platform called Venu. One source suggested Hulu+Live (or Hulu) will be rolled into Disney+, and cease as a separate platform? We don’t want to subscribe to YouTubeTV, but we may have no choice. If anyone knows what’s up, we’d like to know.

Hulu+Live TV and Fubo TV will remain separate services after the proposed merger (barring any lawsuits or regulatory issues). Hulu on-demand stays with Disney.

The Venu Sports joint venture between Disney, Fox and Warner/Discovery will not launch. Instead, Fubo TV will be allowed to create a sports package centered around ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN and ESPN+.

Venu Sports is Dead
The Hulu + Live TV and Fubo brands will remain separately sold and marketed... Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery will make a cash payment to Fubo of $220 million. In addition, Disney has committed to provide a $145 million term loan to Fubo in 2026 as part of the transaction...Disney and Fubo expect the deal to close within 12-18 months.
