Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) - 2021 version

2025 NFL schedule was released. Here are the streaming-only games (outside the team's local market).

• Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime. This includes a Christmas night game between Broncos/Chiefs. Prime also has a Black Friday game (11/28) between Bears/Eagles.

• Youtube and Youtube TV: Friday, 9/5 in Brazil between Chiefs/Chargers.

• ESPN+: Monday 10/20 @ 10pm ET: Texans/Seahawks

• Christmas Day games on Netflix: Cowboys/Commanders and Lions/Vikings.

• Peacock-only game on Saturday 12/27 (week 17). Teams will be announced later as the playoff picture unfolds.

Reference: What are the streaming exclusive games in the 2025-26 NFL season?
The streaming on Netflix is new, as far as i know, and is stupid. What does Netflix have to do with sports? It’s like the NFL is trying to spread itself all around which probably generates a good deal of money. At the same time, it alienates the local fans. The same thing happens with college football. Given the public interest in local teams, like building stadiums, etc., i think it should be required that their games be shown on a local tv station. Being a Lions fan and Detroit native, it’s going to be a hard decision to have to pay for Netflix even if it is only for a month.

Slightly off topic but why is the NFL staging games in Europe?

This year the Minnesota Vikings play two games in Europe in successive weeks. September 28 in Ireland and October 5 in London. Vikings fans in the US central time zone that want to watch it live will need to be in front of the TV at 8:30am for these two games.

What's the point? I seriously doubt the NFL is considering putting a franchise in Great Britain.

International revenue. International interest. International merchandise sales. Long game for a real Euro league. I dunno.

NHL does this too, and they get tons of fans in Europe watching. But nearly 25% of the NHL is European players, so that makes sense. Euro has a few really good leagues that feed the NHL. NHL has said they have no plans of putting a team over there. The leagues doing good there are good for the NHL as it has expanded the player base. Maybe some day same with NFL? Although tackle football is so uniquely N. American (don't forget the CFL... it is a high level league with a few different rules).

If you have a Peacock with ads annual subscription, you will no longer be able to upgrade to ad-free for $6/mo. This Reddit post has a screen shot of the notice.

Peacock finally caught up with me. No more ad free for $6 for me. Interesting notification though. Made me think there was a possibility that it was still available but I checked my account and it wasn't. Unfortunately, ad free Peacock is not worth $13.99/mo. I still have Paramount ad free for cheap (one annual price) but it looks like all the cheap ad free options are going away.

My notice:

Your Plus Option Has Expired

We’re sorry for the disruption, but we were either unable to verify your billing information or your Premium plan was canceled—so your ad-free option expired.

If you want to jump back in, all you need to do is update your payment method or restart your ad-free option. Come back whenever you want.

The streamers are all throwing money at the NFL for a few games to judge the temperature of the water. I dont mind right now.

What I typically do for something like Netflix (if the game interests me) is I sign back up to get the game and then look at the content for the month. Usually, I deem Netflix content to be useful for about a month and then the content is just junk after that (at least for me). Plus, they make it easy to cancel.

3 months of Peacock with ads for free. Promo code PEA2LOPP7EXU95.

Cannot be used to extend a current subscription, but you can use another email address. Tour de France cycling starts 7/5. The Ohio @ Ohio State football game on 9/13 is currently listed as Peacock exclusive.

The last deal they had, I used one of my alternate emails. I wonder if I can get this deal with my previously used email/account. I don’t like so many emails to manage. I may check it out tonight.

Maybe they’re hurting from losing so many members who were willing to pay the $6 for ad free viewing. In a previous discussion on this, we surmised that they made more money off ads than the small fee for ad free. Now they got rid of the cheap ad free and are trying to encourage ad free viewing?? The only option I could find on their site for ad free cost $13.99/mo. I can’t see paying that but now that I lost the ad free view, it does make watching a bit of a pain. For example, I’m watching a show (Two and a half men) and lost my place. I can’t just start any show to see if I’ve watched it yet without watching about a minute of commercials. Ugh.

Can't help with the ad vs no add decision, but I do have a suggestion for the other issue.
If you find your show on the home screen select "episodes" to get a list of available episode. This list is formatted by season and it shows a thumnail of each episode. Each thumbnail shows an indicator bar at the bottom that shows you whether you have started that particular episode yet or not and if you have, how far into the episode you got.

I believe I read that the NFL is considering moving Jacksonville franchise to the UK.

Back to streaming is there any website or other source where one can see which services are currently offering deals? I have a few shows each on Paramount and MAX that I'd like to watch but would rather wait for a deal.

Same, but I guess that's the price of poker.

This says one free month of Paramount+ with code WEMISSYOU. The codes usually work with P+ Premium.

Posted 5 days ago on the Cordcutters sub-Reddit:

"Sportsline is the CBS Sports betting site. Includes a subscription to the Paramount+ Premium plan [formally Paramount+ with Showtime]. It says 30-day trial but as long as you stay subscribed you’ll keep both. Google will help you find a 50% off link or promo code. They also usually give a retention offer if you try to cancel.

I currently have 15 months (12+3 free) of Paramount+ premium for $50 total."

When I went to Sportsline.com using desktop browser, there was a banner at the bottom of the page saying 50% off first quarter with code 'CLUB'. When I clicked the button, the next page had $24.99 for 3 months. It was unclear if that was before/after the discount. After being on the page about two minutes, a popup appeared with "Don't go. First 3 months for less than $10 with exclusive promo code SAVE". The bottom right corner of this page had the info on the P+ "trial".

Amazon is currently offering a "$1/month for 2 months" deal on various streaming channels within Prime Video. Here is a partial list of the channels included in this offer:
  • Paramount+ (Premium/Essential)
  • AMC+ (Ad/Ad-Free)
  • Starz
  • MGM+
  • BritBox
  • Cinemax
  • MovieSphere
  • Vix Premium
  • Acorn TV
  • HIDIVE
  • PBS Masterpiece
  • PBS Documentaries
  • PBS Kids
  • History Vault
  • Hallmark+
I just signed up for the AMC+ deal (Ad-Free) and might also do Paramount+. I noticed that AppleTV+ is also available at a reduced price: $4.99/month, not $1. If you do sign up for any of these, make sure to set a reminder to cancel your subscription(s) 59 days from now!

Prices are not working for me probably because I've been grandfathered into the original Prime Free shipping family for at least ten years now which does not include Prime Video and I'm not considered a Prime member. Not a big deal, I'm already getting pop up offers on my cellphone this morning since I was clicking on a few looking for the deal.
I got an offer from Starz for $2 a month when I prepay for 6 months but I don't think the final season of Outlander is out yet and I want to watch from start to finish. I'll wait till the Thanksgiving deals and maybe they've announced a release date by then.

I cut the cord several years ago but I recently found out my former cable provider, now only my internet provider, has discontinued offering TV service. I think they got rid of set-top boxes in favor of streaming devices for the same service a while back, but I’m struck by how things are changing. They weren’t the only option for hard cable (actually they are fiber) but they had the reputation of being the better choice. I’m still certainly not regretting my cable cutting decision.

Not exactly 'cord-cutting', but if you allow, I have a question about the "Messenger" app on my phone. The app has started hesitating, etc. My question: if I un-install the Messenger app from my Android phone, THEN re-install it back onto the same phone, will all my conversations, contacts, etc be back exactly like they were?

Thank you. (If there is a different category on this forum that I should post this to instead of here, please direct me to it.)

I was talking about the Facebook messenger app. Thanks for the reply. I thought it should be okay to delete and reinstall.....just wanted another opinion.

It's not about the category. You posted to an existing thread about cord cutting, which is completely unrelated to your Facebook problem.
