I had posted about considering moving about 17% of our net worth in a stable Italian company in order to get an investment visa, and very much appreciated the feedback from this helpful community. We are moving forward with this, although we haven't decided for certain to move completely. The visa would give us the chance to spend as much time here as we wish (though more than 183 days/year would trigger heavy taxes without gaining the chance to buy into health care, so that would make no sense without moving entirely). We have taken a permanent apartment here (4 year+4 year lease without increase in rent) and I am quite in love with Bologna. At this point we have spent 2 months, then 2 months, then 1 month, and now 3 months here, for a total of 8 months including winter and summer (the least desirable weather-wise), so I feel we have given it a good test and kicked the tires. Bologna is known for having the best health care in Italy and my main Sloan Kettering doctor has told me that she can hook me up with doctors who deal with the mutation that has given me my 8 cancers (only 5 major) because all the doctors who handle it know each other world-wide. We have no family, as our parents are all gone and I have no siblings. My husband has one sister who lives far from us whom he sees perhaps every 4 years, so that is one tether that many people have to the US that doesn't affect us. 70 is a good time for a big new adventure, right?

Thank you for the update. Please keep us posted!

Interesting, glad your plan is working for you.
Great update, keep us posted.

Wow. I thought we were adventurous moving to Hawaii at 60!

If you can only spend 183 days/year, where do you spend your remaining time if I may ask?

New York City. We've lived there for almost 11 years, since retirement.

I love Bologna! A cousin's son just moved there with his wife (dual citizen). You are living the dream!

We were in that area last year/March. Also Parma and Modena. Very nice, although I would probably need to find an obesity specialist if I were to live there like you are planning.

Bravo!

Good for both of you for moving forward in your life and with your desired lifestyle.

We know several people who have done something similar. And reaped many intangable benefits that they had not even imaged at decision time.

Apart from everything else, Bologna is an idea road and rail hub for the rest of Italy and parts of Europe.

🤣🤣 I DO have an elliptical in the apartment (all the doctors permit me to do besides walk). But yes, the food is usually excellent.

Congratulations! This sounds like a wonderful adventure.

I similarly became a resident of Portugal almost three years ago. So many positive changes in my life as a result of this move. I've been happy with my decision - hopefully you will be, too.

Have you ever presented a "report" to us on your move? Or perhaps a summary of current living situation in Portugal. I'm sorry that I've forgotten if you have. I'm fascinated by the subject of a total life-changing move such as yours. I'm sure I've presented TOO much about our move and situation over the years. Guess I'm still livin' the dream.
