W*rking for the heck of it

I code, but I make sure there is no compensation, and no expectation of being available to do any more than I feel like doing.

In a situation where the guy's business depends on the site, or at least the site is important to the business, that would mean you would become the emergency contact when something went wrong or if an important change was required. That's not for me, but could be for you.

Yes I still test clients but I only worked 300 hours last year. I still love doing it and set my own schedule.

I grew up farming in the 70's and understand running farm equipment. I have a clean driving record and I don't wreck stuff.

I FIRED a few years ago and went back to my grandparents farm where I grew up. Now I am in my 60's and am in great demand to help local farmers. I have my favorite that I work for exclusively. He is in his mid 60's and is a great guy. He treats me well and I show up and work. I don't turn in hours, he pays me what he thinks I am worth at the end of the year and then I give it to my church. Everybody is happy.

I work like a rented mule, but he doesn't make it seem like work. If it felt like work I'd be gone tonight.

I love your story, Stormy. Thanks for sharing. Too bad all w*rkers can't have such a joyous gig.

I'm still teaching - one course per semester after retiring in 2024 from my second career. Remote, no class times so it is very flexible. Once in a while a student asks for help and we set up a zoom. They tend to like that these days so it works for all involved. I can see their screen, I can share mine, and if needed I can even take over (with their permission) their screen to show them something in their code. (That is rarely necessary.) I don't even work in the same state (anymore) for the school. [There is a negative to this part as I need to report non-resident income and file a return...if that is a PITA I will stop doing classes.]

ETA: The income from the above I put into a Roth (employer). My take home pay after doing so is less than $100 every two weeks.

I also helped a friend with a business whose system was custom built for him - by someone who then (later) had a heart attack and died. I spent some time getting it (Visual Basic) from a Windows XP environment to Windows 7 and then (now) on Windows 11, and did a few minor enhancements along the way. I jokingly tell him that he needs to retire before I too kick the bucket.
