What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

Did a 5 mile hike in the foothills this morning. It was cold. As I was driving home, I thought soup sounded really good for lunch. When I got home, my DD was home from class at college and was making broccoli cheddar soup. I helped her finish making it, then we at lunch together. Really nice.

I thought I would go rake up some leaves this afternoon, but I've had enough cold weather for a day. Instead, I'm now enjoying a cup of coffee and goofing off on my laptop in my recliner. I'm hoping the coffee keeps me awake.

Re worked the downspout on the front gutter which was taken down for deck repairs and painting. It had an angle and did not go straight down and then ran in another pipe next to the porch deck. Now the downspout is vertical and the other pipe runs under the deck out of sight. Looks better but was a much bigger hassle than I guessed it would be.

Also changed the latch part in the front door handle so it works better now. At least that was easy and only cost $7.

It still had to go in from the top, through all sorts of cables and whatnot. Thanks, Ford.
We finished the digging at that level and that frees me up to go work on the house.

Morning figure skating. Dodging miniature people on hockey skates. This evening, swing dance and likely a stop at a dive for some live band blues after.

Finished reading the book about half-orcs that was on the reading thread. Got in 20k steps exploring Cozumel on the final port stop of our cruise. Excellent blue corn tacos in a hole in the wall taqueria.

We spent a week there and do enoy the whole vibe of Cozumel. 👍

Kids and grandkids coming over later to celebrate DGK birthday.

I got a call from work today, I've been retired for 22 years. It seems that the cold case unit was looking at an old homicide that I did the computer forensic exam on and they wanted to know what I remembered about procedures and analysis. The Sgt. who called me came on the department the year I retired!

I told him what I could remember, which wasn't much, but he'd expected that.

It was an interesting call otherwise. The reason I retired when I did was frustration over getting the ongoing training and equipment that we needed, otherwise I enjoyed the job and didn't really want to retire. But all that turned around, and now the unit has 14 officers, a multi-million dollar budget and is nationally recognized for their expertise. Wow. It took having the moon and stars align to have the right people in the right place at the right time for all that to happen, but I was glad to hear that it did.
What a cool story!

So there you have it folks, one is never truly "retired!"

Trimmed some trees, blew leaves, got the kids DDonut, bringing them to open skate later, practiced the Uke, read a little bit of "Titan" by Chernow (third book of his now.)

What else...Oh, I showered!!

Walked around Lake Kawaguchi and enjoyed the spectacular views of Mount Fuji.

Rode in a taxi and four different trains. Stopped mid journey to tour Matsumoto Castle. It is over 500 years old, six stories tall, and made entirely using mortise and tenon joints - no nails. We climbed all the way to the top on age polished and incredbly steep stairs - in our socks. I could feel the building moving beneath me when I was on the top floor.

A good, productive day. Did my cardio workout and then cleaned the lower floor before heading off to some errands and then the blood bank. With the prices of precious metals skyrocketing, I've been taking mismatched earrings and jewelry I no longer wear and which has no sentimental value to a gold-buying place. Today it was six heavy monogrammed sterling silver napkin rings and a sterling silver yo-yo. Both were from my Ex's family and they weren't interested in getting them back. They don't fit into DS and DDIL's lifestyle. I came out with $203- 2 crisp $100 ills and 3 one-dollar coins which the grandchildren will love. Just moved $200 to one of the kids' UGTMA accounts- she took a loss on Starbucks earlier this year.

And the blood bank has one more unit each of platelets and plasma.

We finished some backfilling on the big job, then I dumped out the pea gravel there, and took the dump truck to the shop to get the trailer and then to go rent a telehandler for my house job. I got it mobilized up here and now I'm ready to haul in some more rock to make the work site more passable. I'll have to do some of that reverse spread dumping to get it done.

After having read Yukio Mishima's "The Temple of the Golden Pavlion" about 30 years ago, I finally got to see it in person today (actually the reconstruction of the one that was burned down). It's pretty spectacular. Its real name is Kinkakuji Temple..And that's not yellow paint, it's gold leaf.

What an interesting trip and thanks for sharing your travels.

Using the gasoline lawn mower I mowed the back yard hopefully for the last time this year, then drained the remaining fuel from the tank and let it run dry. Then changed the oil and the blade, and sharpened the old one. It was getting dark so I quit, but tomorrow I'll wash it, change the air filter, and scrape the underside clean, and maybe paint the underside with old motor oil, a trick I learned from a mechanic to keep it from rusting over the winter. I may not use it at all in the future but I want to keep it for a spare in case the electric one croaks unexpectedly.

Tomorrow's projects are to sharpen/change the blade on the electric mower and probably pull that one inside to the storage part of the basement for the off season. That one can store vertically so it doesn't take much room and keeping it inside will keep corrosion to a minimum. Then put down the overwinter fertilizer, and DW has promised me a haircut.

Rain forecasted for most of this week, pretty drippy out today.
Staying warm and dry inside today, with plans for laundry, reading, and manicotti for dinner with green salad and sourdough

In the morning hang out at coffee shop.
Played squegee man, 17 windows 3 door glasses inside and out.
Was way overdue, 4 changes of water/soap solution and 4 kitchen towls later they are all shiny, yes there is a world out there.
Shortly, off to Pittsburgh for Swing dance.

Today we walked through the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in Kyoto. Some of those shoots are every bit of 50 feet tall and several inches in diameter. It was a very nice and peaceful walk in the cool of the early morning.
