What did you do today 2025

Got notified today that I've been OK'd for the home I want in the CCRC I want. I hadn't realized that I was so high on the wait list after almost three years, so definitely a nice surprise. It's still to be built, part of an expansion, so I'll be able to have it set up to my preferences. I expect it to be ready about a year from now, maybe a little more, which is fine with me. Looking forward to someday moving there; it will be a big load off my mind.

For the first time since retirement 17 years ago, figured up my income, assets and expenses.
I need to spend more money.

Did my first bike ride since December...no knee pain , post operation of August 2024. Biked 7 miles Great Guernsey Trail (forgot my water and glasses...shorten ride) and hiked one mile...afraid of off trail biking yet, so I walked it - probably for the better as it is the first time out; and biking here is what prompted the knee issue in 2023. Recently it was determined that Lyme disease was the culprit.

I had foot surgery last Friday. I went to my post-op appt this morning. Everything looked good. The doc was happy I had no bruising or swelling. He commented that it looked like I had not been walking on it. He told me not to, so I have not. I hop, crawl, use crutches and elevate whenever I can. It is no fun, but I have two more weeks before the stitches come out. I think I may go stir crazy.

I started a little shell and core job today, after getting my annual DOT medical certificate for the Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
I'm good to go for another year. Looks like about 3 weeks of jobs to do for the company, then I can probably bring the equipment back and finish up the bulk of the groundworks and sewer and water stuff at our place.

Accompanied DS to a medical procedure this morning, then we went out to lunch at a restaurant that served delicious Caribbean food.

Did a float down the Buffalo and spotted a couple of elk on one morning. Near Ponca.

Just finished 40 ml ride. Now I am nursing knees. Going to start deck refresh later, replacing flooring and removing railing to go with a perimeter bench for better viewing. Hoping that as I remove floor timbers the structure is in good shape..... I'm sure it will take a couple weeks w my go slow approach.

Mowed the front half of the yard, it was a bit overgrown from all the rain. Now I'm taking a break and will do the back half later on today.

Leaving to pick up my inlaws at EWR, will be in town for a few days for a family event.

Unseasonably cold this morning. Started out at 41 degrees with shorts, arm warmers, short finger gloves and a wind vest. Way under dressed. Took me 30 minutes of hard riding to go from frigid to just cold. Another 30 minutes got me to cool. Rode just over 40 miles. Came home to left over Hatch green chili enchiladas which warmed up. Feeling lazy right now.

Coffee with sister this morning, she and kids are planning Bro in laws memorial service. She is doing relatively well. He lived longer than Drs predicted with his liver cancer and died very quickly in his sleep early hospice care.
She and her son have met with their FA and estate lawyer, so she is taking care of business. Their good friend is a CPA, so she has good folks to help.

Went to visit the graves of my great great grandparents and see the house in which they lived in Lake City, Minnesota.
I didn't know you had roots in Minnesota. Right there on the Mississippi.

Yesterday I booked the hotel for our every 5 year "cousins reunion" near Vegas, MN (the 10,000 lakes part of MN).

My father was born in Hibbing. The family were mostly iron miners on the Mesabi Range (although the Lake City ones were not miners). Before that, they mined iron and copper in the UP, and before that mined tin and copper in Cornwall and iron in Germany.

That is a hard life, my DF family worked in the steel plants in Allentown PA... also a hard life..

Yesterday evening I went out and picked dewberries. This morning I baked a cobbler! Since the oven was already heated up on a warm and humid day, I also made a batch of buttermilk oat muffins.

Mowed the back half of the yard that I intended to to yesterday but fell asleep instead. Oh well, nobody took the job from me so it was still waiting patiently in the morning. Dagnabit.

Back in early March, we had a snowstorm with wet, heavy snow. After shoveling, I had tendonitis in both elbows and my right foot hurt. The elbows recovered in about a month but the foot still hurt. During my recent two week road trip we did a lot of walking and my foot hurt even worse the whole time. So this morning I went went to a podiatrist for the first time ever, to learn that I have plantar fasciitis. I'm hoping that, if I do all the stretches and massaging and such, it will go away without resort to a cortisone shot.

In the afternoon, I went out to my garden and sowed my first tranche of sweet corn and green beans, as well as my winter squashes (spaghetti, butternut and pumpkin). Pulled some rhubarb stems for the young wife, who is making a crumble as I type this. I will go out tomorrow to get some asparagus.

My mom's side was from North Dakota and the lakes area of Minnesota, farmers, I guess. My dad's mom was Wisconsin, dairy. My dad's dad was Minneapolis, manufacturing. A German, but the rest were from Norway. My directs moved to the twin cities. Lots of the fisherman from the border lakes that I met worked the iron mines in "da range". Your family's mining background came from an impressively long history.

Back to the topic at hand, today I applied to get 85,000 United Airlines miles and succeeded (Chase United Explorer). I need to spend $3K in the next 3 months, and with the travel I have planned, that won't be a problem. If I'm lucky, by the time I get the points credited, I'll be able to buy business class back from South America with points.

This morning I went into our backyard and found a rabbit with a mouthful of grass just beyond our back patio. Interestingly, upon seeing me it did not run away - just hopped a few feet further and sat there. I approached a little closer and it did not move. It was not eating the grass... so I suspected it must be building a burrow nearby. Sure enough, I went inside and looked out a window, and saw it go to a spot near one of our trees, deposit the grass, then hop over to another area of the yard, gather more grass, go back and deposit it again. I put up a trailcam above the location to see if I can capture any action.

In mid-morning DW, youngest DS, and I ventured into DC to see "The Art of the Brick" exhibition. A fascinating collection of 100+ Lego sculptures created by Nathan Sawaya. Some are modeled after famous art pieces (e.g. "The Scream", "Whistler's Mother", "Nike of Samothrace" - a.k.a "Winged Victory", "David", etc.), some are originals, some are of animals - a wide variety. I could not help but total up the pieces used, my final count was over 1.2 million. DW and Ds were super into Legos and still have many of the larger sets they were gifted when younger, plus we have about 6 large bins of Lego pieces I have been told in no uncertain terms to not throw out (they do come it handy at holiday time to make things like supports for tree lights to allow the train to run under them :) .

Afterwards, we got out of DC before encountering too much of the Friday rush hour traffic and had a late but large "this is my meal for the day lunch". DS has left for his home, and now I'm just puttering around the home computing lab. while DW decides if she wants us to watch a movie or have a game night later.

Update: I forgot the NBA playoff s were on tonight, so we decided to watch the Knicks destroy the Celtics, while texting with family and friends about the game.

There are some threads in this. Here’s one. Here’s a NYT article (here) that shows an exercise that helps. My brother does a variation of that and it words well.
