What did you do today 2026

Today, for the 36th year in a row, we had our traditional New Year's Day brunch, consisting of (home smoked) chicken and (home grown) butternut squash hash with poached eggs on top, cranberry scones with walnut honey butter, and champagne. We dress the table with proper starched linen, china, crystal and shiny silver. When, as today, the ground is covered in snow and the sun is shining brightly through the dining room windows, it is a sparkly sight indeed. We also always play Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue while we eat.

About to take down Christmas lights. 6500 of them. All day project.

Enjoying a lazy morning, just made DSG breakfast--his favorite scrambled eggs, with sausage crumbles and cheese, with cinnamon toast.
Rang in the NY with kids and grands last night. I was surprised the littles one (age6) stayed awake!

Took down our Christmas tree today.

Did I mention it's the absolute most realistic artificial tree we've ever seen?

Swept up over 100 "needles".

Funded my HSA! Boom. Done.
I scheduled a distribution from my 401(k) for our annual expenses + HSA contributions.

Once that withdrawal / deposit clears, (could take up to 14 days) then we have to visit our local bank so DW can set up a new HSA account. (we want a local branch office and they actually offer a somewhat competitive interest rate for their HSA accounts) Once that account is set up, I'll transfer $4,400 into her HSA and $5,400 into my HSA. (same bank).

Then, once that account is established, we'll transfer her old HSA from her former j*b (handled my Health-Equity out of Utah) into this new account so everything is in one account for her.

So there'll be no "Boom. Done." for us this year.

The usual sunrise over Tampa Bay beginning the new year and breakfast with the few friends willing to great up and do it with me. EOM finance update (NW at new high but expenses higher so only a nominal win). -Still fun.

I contribute monthly into my HSA on a monthly basis just in case if my HI situation changes for some reason mid-year I won't have an over contribution.

LOL. I transferred the funds from our taxable to my HSA and it took maybe two minutes. It would have been faster, but I had to unlock and relock the transfer lockdown feature.

Confirmed that my Medicare coverage starts today and used my Renew Active Code to get a free "open play" membership at my local Picklr (indoor pickleball facility for those rare rainy Arizona days (today).

Woke up early and went for a morning ski with my better-half.

It’s a New Year and another trip to the ER today with FIL.

Wife is with him now. She didn’t want me around all the sick people in the ER so she kicked me out. Killing time at the nearby gym while waiting for her call to come back. Fingers crossed it’s not a serious illness.

Morning run. Drive to town for Jeep wash & bananas. Year end portfolio analysis. Helped DW take down the Christmas tree. Re-upped Sirius on my 2 vehicles. Took some naps and watched TV. And a frozen pizza for dinner.

Finished building a laundry room and mudroom cabinets yob... On to the painting tomorrow or Monday...

This morning I did the Norwegian 4x4 on my rower.

I closed out the books on 2025.

We got Walmart+ when it was on sale for $50/yr. I placed an order this morning. My DW then needed something, so I placed a second order. My DD2 then needed something, so I placed a third order.

Can we start the year over? Just discovered a leak in the roof (master bedroom). the area is covered by solar panels and the company we used, Sun Power, went bankrupt and left everyone high and dry. This ain't gonna be easy .

Made an Irish Beef and Guinness Stew and reminisced about our time in Ireland 2 years ago. Calculated the year end Net Worth, and planned what to do with CDs (and a TIPS) maturing in 2026. Started kicking around possible road trip ideas for 2026 ... I need to put in my vacation time requests as I aim to "Retire With Zero" (vacation days) in less than 2 years.

As of today I have a valid last will and testament!

I've had a very simple will printed out and ready for signatures since COVID times, but never bothered to get it witnessed and notarized. Today I copied it, in ink pen, word for word on to the front and back of a thick sheet of paper. Boom! Holographic will that doesn't need to be notarized and witnessed (does a will need to be notarized and signed by 2 witnesses?). I found my state law that plainly says the will is valid.

I've still got plans to get the printed will properly executed, but in the meantime I'm covered. Of course everything is set up with beneficiaries and TOD, so the big stuff has been covered all along, but nice to have a legit will.

My wife's bestie came over to stay with her and I came up to the new house job for the first time in a while. I had three guys working up here and they needed some input. We installed four exterior doors and pulled a bunch of wire in.
After seeing how the weather plays on the end of the house, I'm extending the eyebrow awning over the basement door.

Today was a very boring day. But I updated all my spreadsheets and worked on my NokBox.
Sadly, that meant reviewing wills/trusts, etc..

I didn't change all the batteries in my smoke detectors like they tell you to...oh well ..they will wake me up at 2 am in the morning in the next couple of months.

Oh and I was depressed that Ohio State lost last night.

After spending a few hours researching, I found a repair roofer that has experience with solar panels that was open and answered his phone today  . He's coming by tomorrow afternoon, fitting me in with another crisis he has scheduled. Other than small cloudbursts, the big storm isn't supposed to get here until tomorrow night so we'll at minimum have the tarp in place before it arrives. We have atmospheric river that will bring in storm after storm until mid week.

Oh, I forgot, my 9.5 year old dishwasher crapped out Christmas Day!!! At least that was an easy fix with just a quick trip to the local appliance store. Installation to take place next Tuesday.

I just opened my HSA account and funded it with cash from my taxable brokerage account, all within the same brokerage.

Took down our Christmas tree today.

Also did the Un-Christmasing detail but only had about a dozen un-real needles. Downsized the decoration collection from 6 to 4 totes.
DW wanted to re-arrange the living room....UGH... should have bought a lighter sofa set.
Also started a conversation with my mother about buying her house, someone talk me out of it.....

Leg day plus elliptical... was wobbly for a few minutes after. Will do 4x4 saturday! Welcomed home neighbors from their cross country sprinter van adventure. They were gone 3+ weeks. Looked over DMs annuity to understand options to withdraw. All are expensive, what a scam. She signed the contract 31 days after dad's passing. Salesman took such advantage of the financial illiteracy of my parents. After I found out what they had involved themselves in, i convinced DM to let me be involved. Salesman won't come around anymore but it burns me to this day.

Why, what is your goal/plan for the home.
