What did you do today 2026

Got up early to drop the better-half off for a business related trip. Then my usual volunteer shift at the senior center before a lunchtime get together with friends. That gave me just enough time to take the pups for a walk before their dinner time. Now I'm doing some more trip planning. Hoping to get home to see family before the holidays.

Not sure how I ever had time to waste 40+ hours each week for a paycheck.

Several years ago we had to have the water line from the water meter at the street to the house replaced and ever since there has been a low spot along where the ditch was dug to get to the water line. So today I finally put down seven bags of topsoil to level off where the ground from the ditch-digging had settled. It'll probably take a few more bags after those settle to level off even further. If I ever get around to it.

Make sure to also check out Dead Horse SP and if you want to make the drive, go see Sego Canyon outside Thompson Springs. Spectacular pictographs.
I’ve been to DHSP twice before. I did go to Marlborough Point and flew my drone there.

Getting ready to head to San Diego, but I helped out with a community cleanup this morning.

While there were lots of different cleanup projects to tackle, I showed up with a pooper-scooper and 5-gallon bucket lined with a trash bag. In just under 2 hours I managed to pick up 10 gallons of dog (and coyote) waste from all of the trails nearest to town.

After cleaning myself up, I mustered the energy to stop by a friend's BBQ, now I'm resting with a full belly.

If I ever get around to it.
Here ya' go!

Got out early for a gravel bike workout up into the Ntl Forest today. After two hours and 25 miles grinding up the gravel forest highway, turned for home for a fun and fast descent back to town.

Took the pups on a long hike today. Clouds were supposed roll in earlier than they did and the full sun left me with some hot doggos. We took our time getting back to the trailhead stopping at every shade spot.

Side note: I sustained a ride-preventing injury two weeks ago when I mashed my thumb knuckle on the brake clamp and likely strained some ligaments. Full range of motion, but tender and swollen. It's healing, slowly, and the pups are loving all the hiking, but not being able to ride is driving me bonkers.

Today I continued work on the upstairs repairs. Over the weekend I got the foamboard cut and installed between the studs.

Then I sealed up the seams, let the spray foam dry and installed the fiberglass.

Today I started demolition on the second wall...

Tomorrow I'll finish the destruction of the old finish and get ready to cut more foamboard.

Nice work and a solid soundtrack!

Built a framed cover for egress window using chain link and top posts. Mounting brackets arrive tomorrow. Cleaned the cover and ready for bracket to arrive. Then will paint the whole thing with rustoleum tomorrow. Out to dinner with spouses work gang this evening.

The window in the first picture does not look like it was framed correctly. There should be king studs on the sides that run the entire length, but yours look cut. There should also be jack studs that frame the window which appear missing. To me it looks like all the weight of the roof is pressing directly onto the top of the window.

I would tend to agree. There is some load transmitted down thru the rafters, but this is not standard practice around here.

I planted 5 tomato plants a few days ago. Today, I found 3 of them lost their tips, maybe due to birds, squirrels, insects, I don't know. So I replanted a few of them. I just hope that at least one of them will grow up and yield some tomatos.

I just back from the dental office for hygienist visit to clean/polish teeth.
We got the bags all unpacked and suitcases put away until next trip. Pup picked up from doggie hotel yesterday and hasn't left our sides since.

Had my 6 months dermatologist visit, being former melanoma I am on the every 6 months for life plan. As typical, around 8 freeze spots and then a couple scrapes to send for lab analysis. I never get out of the dermatologist free of some type of work done :(

Tomorrow I have my 6 month primary care doctor checkup, this time fasting with blood draw. My lucky week! I was also supposed to have the 6 month dental cleaning, but my dentist decided to close up his local office, so need to find a new dentist for me and DW.

Went to spin class in the morning, then shipped off a box with a backpack I'm returning for warranty repair or replacement.

I learned that Amazon and other e-commerce companies can economically ship small items in huge boxes, but it's unaffordable when an individual tries to do the same. I spent a half hour cutting down a cardboard moving box to minimize the amount of air I was shipping.

Got out on a training ride. 45 miles of rutty Forest Service gravel with 4,200 ft of vertical in 4hr6m.

Have an 80 mile gravel bike race coming up over in Oregon end of May. That race attracts very fit & fast Masters. Need to tune up the bike and it’s engine this month … or I’ll get left in the dust!

The house was built in 1910 by the Kimberly-Clark corporation for workers at a local lumber/paper mill. The windows were replaced somewhere around 1986. All the old single-pane windows were taken out and replaced with sealed double-pane windows. Then vinyl siding was installed around the entire house. We bought the house in 2009.

With such a steep roof pitch, I don't think they worried about jack studs and roof loads back in 1910. The mill supplied free heating wood back then before they switched to coal heat sometime in the '40s, so insulation wasn't anything they worried about back then, either.

They've been like that for 40 years, so I'm not too worried about it.

First 38ml trail ride this year, yesterday. Continueing to increase mileage weekly. Bike maintenance and some outdoor painting today.

Yesterday….
Had the electricians in for punch list stuff. Added dimmers, a floor outlet, island outlets. Some had to be done after the fact because they would not have given us CO.
Finished the day at the new performance theatre in town where we saw a touring Broadway show.
Today the doggies get a treat with a long walk at the state park.
