What did you do today 2026

I decided to detail my 2006 truck and 2012 camper. I think it turned out amazing for a 20 year old truck that has never been parked under any sort of cover.

Cooked my brain a bit today. Rode 50 miles with 3200 feet of climbing in mid 80’s weather. Not acclimated to the heat yet with that kind of effort.
Yikes! Too early for that kind of heat. It was mid-70s last week and my face is fire engine red in a selfie I took after an hour of sustained climbing.

With higher elevations starting to open up, we took another big mountain bike ride this morning (~20 miles / +2500 feet of climbing) combined with a summit hike for the final few hundred feet of rock scramble to reach the peak. Topped out around 10,000ft in elevation. Temps in the 60s and solid cloud cover the entire time.

We went to a shopping center’s restaurant, but beforehand, we went into the center’s Lenscrafter outlet. We specifically stopped there to see if any legacy staff from another Lenscrafter outlet were there. We hadn’t seen them since they left the other outlet many months ago. They were there, and they were so happy to see us. One came running out from behind the register to give us a big hug.

It was a great feeling to be connected.

I made pickled onions and pickled eggs this morning, and did a bit of light housework. I enjoyed my pickled onions on a tuna avocado bowl for lunch and then spent 4 hours at pottery class. Turns out glazing pottery isn't nearly as much fun as making pottery.

On the way home I got a pickleball text, but we were only able to play for a half hour before the rain showed up. We have had BUCKETS of rain here in south Alabama the last 3 weeks- at least 20 inches!

I’ve posted before that we don’t eat out just the sake of consumption, but more for entertainment. Tonight was another fun one. I had Moo Ping, DW chicken parm all served up in ways we’ve never seen before. Happy Tuesday everyone.

Finally broke down and ordered a new 8-gallon portable air compressor. I currently have a Campbell Hausfeld 7-gallon one that I got back in 2003. It still works perfectly, but I worry about the steel tank rusting and failing spectacularly.

The new one has an aluminum tank.

Was time to mow the grass. I could barely see the top of the several Robins' heads when they landed.

Changed the furnace/A/C air filter and rinsed out the used one. (I use the type that can be cleaned. The normal ones won't stay in the holder tracks.) Then flushed the water heater - lots more calcium than usual so it took a while. In another year or so it'll be time to take a look at the anode rod as well. I might break down and get an electric one that plugs in and doesn't ever need replacing.

Very nice work @Surewhitey .
Today I put another coat of paint on the boat build and varnish on the console. Powerwashed the patio, outdoor shower area and the patio table and chairs. Took the Jag F Type in for a scan as the check engine light was on. Guy was great- he cleared the codes and told me to "get out there and drive that thing, and I mean drive it !" He told me to put at least 100 miles on it and come back next week for a scan. No charge.
That V-8 was screaming on the ride home! Have a road trip planned for tomorrow on some back roads.

Nice! Was there a whistle stop or just a drive by? Many people?

My grandson is a real train aficionado and will be visiting this summer, hopefully we’ll get a chance to see it.
Yesterday there were 3 stops - 1 in Iowa, 2 in Illinois. They usually draw a crowd of a few thousand people at the stops. Difficult to get close to the train, or even find parking. I've gone to stops before in previous years trips, but yesterday I just went to 3 or 4 places where I could get close as it passed by.

It's on its way to Philadelphia for Independence Day, then head back to Cheyenne. It'll be back in Illinois in July. July 17th from South Holland heading southwest to Joliet, then on tracks close to I-55 to Bloomington. No stops are planned for the 17th. There are planned stops in Springfield and Girard, Illinois on the 18th.

If you are in Illinois, Springfield on the 18th for a half hour 10:45-11:15 is your best chance to see it stopped. Your grandson would love it! It's huge, and loud!

Here's the schedule. This page also has a tracker that shows where the train is.

More riding. More cheat pulling. Getting ready to leave for our Lindblad.
