What did you do today 2026

Wednesday I finished loading the steel plates and finish lumber and PT deckboards, and then picked up a large wad of rail making materials at the steel vendor.
I will tack the steel sheets to the trailer rails, wire brush them, and use my trailer as the welding table. I leveled it so I can use a square and level during the fabrication process.

I backed it into the carport where I I'll do all the fabrication on site and under cover.

Yesterday I spoke with the building inspector to see what I had to get done at a minimum. I was hoping to put off the siding patches I left off for accent wood, but no. I need to plan on that. I do get to leave all the soffits for now. That is big deal with the cantilevers and 24x24 carport.
I got a quote on the double check valve and Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) required for my water connection next Wednesday.
I stopped by the local welding shop who stocks gasses for a vendor, and started gearing up for the welding work.
 
I'm unpacking and finding my way around my new neighborhood. I've been up here many times to visit DS and family but they're east of here. The area around my community has a lot of recent development but that includes just about everything. Costco, CVS and HyVee (regional grocery chain that was my favorite in KC and is headquartered here) are all close by. Costco is always a weekend excursion for the family (I gift them an Executive Membership every year) so I'll likely be joining them a lot. I plan to do most of my own cooking. There's a restaurant and a bistro on the property and I get a $300 monthly credit which I will be sure to use up, but I had dinner with a group at the restaurant last night and the food was quite bland. I appreciate that it's not over-salted like so man restaurant foods, but I have a cast-iron digestive system and like more spice. I guess I won't find That or Indian dishes here. Next time I'll be sure to bring in some of my hot pepper powder.

Settlement check from my house supposed to arrive via UPS today. They tried to wire it to my Fidelity account but it was directed to the Trust and I gave them my checking account info so Fidelity rejected it. When I have my estate papers re-written I'm going to blow up that darn trust (yes, it IS revocable) unless I get a compelling reason not to do so.

It looks like your division is a nice open area. Will it stay like this?
 
We did get in an early morning (8:00) walk and the rest of the day I monitored the function of the central A/C. Yesterday and today the outside temperature topped out at 102°F and about 40% RH. The A/C is doing a fine job. I have no interest in doing anything outside until the temperatures get civilized.
 
Our street is having a block party this evening so I prepped a couple dishes and they are chilling in the fridge. Soon I need to start setting up the outdoor games and get dressed up for the party theme. Since our neighbors across the street moved out a couple months ago DH and I are now the oldest on the street!! It's our turn to be the ones who have just one drink and head inside the earliest.

I think I'd be looking for ways to cause M $50k worth of trouble. But then I'm a truly venomous SOB when adequately provoked. I'm certain Athena is much nicer than I am.
 
I signed up for Medicare today. Plan g, plan d, will save over 500/MO compared to my HPHP through the ACA... With far lower OOP per year. So excited. Doesn't kick in till 9/1...

Also set up more excursions/tours for our fall trip to France, Italy, Greece, Jordan, Egypt trip this fall. Spending my healthcare insurance savings, lol

I have 4+ acres with neighboring undeveloped land, and a typical city lot development immediately to the east.
I put the house very close to that development by choice to get the views we liked the best. Those trees you see are ours.

Well, I've definitely been too tolerant of bad behavior over the years because I was taught to be "Midwest nice". I'm getting slightly better at it. A quote by the writer Dorothy Parker guides me on this subject:

“I am not a vengeful woman.. possibly for the perfectly working reason that if you just sit back and wait, the bastards will get theirs without your having to do anything about it, and it will be fancier than anything you could have dreamed up.”

It's pretty much true. My alcoholic, abusive, financially irresponsible Ex died penniless and alone of multiple organ failure at 64. The guy who fired me in 1995 AND the guy who fired the guy who fired me were both fired less than 6 months later. The woman behind the nasty politics at another company that led to my ER at 61 was also gone 6 months later and doesn't appear to have done anything impressive since.

M is 55, unmarried, has two ex-wives who divorced him waiting for him to grow up and he has MS. Eventually he'll be dependent on his half-sister. I have 3 major trips planned- one in September, two in 2027 and one I'd like to take in 2028, 3 beloved grandchildren, a son who's turned into a wonderful husband, father and provider and a daughter-in-law who's the daughter I never had.

Too many blessings to waste time on revenge.

The phrase I remember for situations like you experienced is ..."What goes around, comes around" (later). I've seen it happen to folks who mistreated me in the past.

The kids and grandkids will be here later this afternoon for dinner and fireworks tonight. Heading to the store soon to pick up the food I ordered. Many of the families here go get the "illegal" fireworks, so we'll do the tame ones and watch the others from the street!
It hasn't been too noisy with fireworks so far this week, which is unusual.
 
My husband was highly involved in an America250 local event-a swing era dancen honoring veterans and first responders by raising money for various organizations. I went along to volunteer at wherever I was needed. I ended up manning the merch table with one other person. The place was absolutely packed, and the dancers ranged from early 20s to 98. It was in an old ballroom with a springloaded dance floor, while my husband was on stage as the band director.

It was really nice to stay completely out of the heat most of the day. DH was so tired afterward he slept in until almost noon and I managed to sleep in until 7:15 AM. Today we have a quiet day-no barbecues or anything. We've seen enough fireworks for a lifetime. Our celebration was the dance yesterday. I've taken some herbs out of the garden and plan to make Cornish game hens with herb butter and I'm working on some music parts for my flute choir.
 
Lots of work this morning out in the orchard trimming up trees. Neighbor just got a little yappy dog that comes out to the orchard to keep me company.

Headed out on my bike this afternoon between World Cup games for a workout.

No fireworks tonight. County sheriff is out in force to enforce the ban on fireworks.
 
Training for a 2027 half marathon - first outdoor training run today. Listened to some streaming radio stations on my new stereo. Watched some YouTubes. Researched bluetooth speakers and other things online and cleaned my workshop.

Both daughters are distance runners and are working on me to do a half marathon. Apparently no is not an acceptable answer. 🤣 Starting to work in running a couple days a week instead of gravel bike workouts.
 
I played a round of golf and I am exhausted in this heat. Our high is supposed to be 108 degrees F today. Later today we are heading out to a concert (Firefall, Orleans and Atlanta Rhythm Section), with an overnight stay at a nearby hotel to avoid drunk drivers on the streets.

Nice. I only need 1 acre to have land for a large ground-mounted solar array to be off-grid, plus a shed for the equipment.

It was all about location and the views. No acre was available that did that. The adjacent 2 acres did and sold the day before I found the 4. Same seller, a 90 year old lady in a nursing home who was ready LOL.
Then the 2 acre parcel came up for sale again and if I had sold the current home I'd secure that piece.
The view over my house from the good spot on that 2. I see more water but this is crispy clean for a mile from the center of town.

Today I swapped out the storm door at the rear of the house. Last week Thursday-Sunday I took off the metal door, stripped off all the paint, primed, painted, and re-hung it. Today's installation if the new storm door made everything (almost) everything look as good as new. I still need to do some paint touch-up, but tomorrow's another day.

Edit: Today is also my 1-year anniversary of being retired. Figures I would spend part of it w*rking. :biggrin:
 
Went and picked wild berry's and mowed at the ranch. Came home at noon eat and then went and watched our small community 4th parade with kids and granddaughters. They have been out on her folks ranch and will spend the night with tonight after a BBQ and fireworks at here sisters home. We will attend that and will be about 25 people there. No rest for grandma and pa tonight. Lol
