Tonight we're taking DW's MGB out across state lines to find a place where we can watch the fireworks from the car with the top down. They're scheduled to start around 9:30 tonight, which is late for us, but the temperature is supposed to be down to upper-to-mid-60s by then, so it should be a nice night for it.

Of course, the drive home in the dark will be somewhat challenging with the 1977 sealed-beam headlights and basically no dash lights. No gas gauge, either, so I'll put in $20 worth of premium fuel (or whatever it takes to top off the tank) before we head out.

Life's an adventure, right?

So far this morning, I went out to my garden at 6am to pull up weeds for 4 hours while the temperature was only very uncomfortably hot and humid, instead of life threatening. We just got home yesterday from two weeks in Maine, and the garden has become a jungle. I managed to get half of my 1200 sqft. plot cleared. Fortunately, it rained in the night which makes it easier to pull the weeds all the way out. I'll get the rest tomorrow, I hope. At least the crops are also growing well.

Nice cool morning, have the windows open to cool the house. Got all the papers and party stuff picked up from doing fireworks with grandkids. Send a bunch of leftover food home with DD, still have a ton here. No cooking today, which is good as it is heading to 82 later.

Brother and I had cut and pulled blackberries the last time we were home. Yesterday I loaded them up in a borrowed dump trailer, along with construction debris I brought down to flesh out the load.
The transfer station was open today and the dogs and I took it in and emptied it.
They needed some treat after last night's artillery by the neighbors. I quit counting but would estimate 300 large explosions over the course of the day, within 150 yards or so. They were quivering and anxious until 1 AM when we all got a little sleep.
In years past we would take them camping in the national forest. This year we did not have reservations in the hurry scurry of house building, and the trailer was an integral part of the building process for crew and family to stay in.
Next year it is either Canada or a reservation miles inside of a no-fireworks area.

Isn't wax supposed to be water repellant? Are you sure it helps with getting it to rain?

I'm actually considering adding a doorbell to our 1910 home.

Although I'd prefer either one of those older round push-buttons or even better, one that was shaped like a crescent moon.

There's already a spot in the basement next to the AC panel where I can mount the transformer.

Some of the people who live in the big expensive houses right down on the beach here have Ring doorbells that announce, in a stentorian tone, "Warning - You are being monitored", whenever someone comes within a certain distance. Since the houses are very close to the sidewalk, that means just about everyone walking past triggers them. It really annoys the young wife when she's out for a walk, so she always flips them off.

Finally saw DS and family today- I'd moved up here a week ago but they were 1.5 hours away with DDIL's mother, who's recovering from surgery. In the interim week I unpacked a lot of boxes, had gone grocery shopping, had gotten somewhat organized, so we actually had enough places for everyone to sit.

They stayed longer than I expected! The kids thought it was cool to see things they remembered from my house in a new setting. The little cafe on the premises with a freezer stocked with individual servings of ice cream, a fancy coffee maker and tea supplies (no charge) was a huge hit. We went out on the adjacent porch and saw a lot of bird species. We were the only ones in the gym and my 7-year old grandson was rolling all over the exercise ball. The kids are talking about staying overnight once in awhile. I'm so glad they feel comfortable here.

Yesterday- finally- I got the check with the proceeds from my house sale. They'd tried to wire it but Fidelity rejected it because it was written to the trust and I'd given them my checking account info. What can I say? It's been a crazy time. So, I endorsed it as Trustee and then in my own name and mobile-deposited it. Thank heaven for the latter. The nearest Fidelity offices are 3 hours away in various cities. Tomorrow I'm going to call Fidelity and see if I can twist some arms to get them to release the funds I'm wiring to my stepson- they usually put a hold on large deposits. I have plenty of other assets in Fidelity- just not enough cash in after-tax accounts- so I hope they'll co-operate. I just want to get that part done and cut off contact with my stepson.

I went to church with them this morning because I wanted to be with family and they're a wonderful community, may of whom I already know. Next week I'm visiting a nearby church in my own denomination, which I hope will be welcoming and a place where I can find a new community.

I've said all along that I'd really breathe easier when the money was in my account. I think I'll have some of the good scotch tonight.

Cleaning out some furnishings from the garage, left over after we re arranged some rooms.
Two beds and a rocker going to local community warehouse (the beds have had covers on them, so mattresses are basically new). They will inspect them first, but after a phone call I had, they should be accepted.
Then other misc. stuff will go to the metro recycle/dump--old paint, old appliances, etc.

Climbed myself into oblivion today. Just a bunch of hill repeats. It was 90 when I finished. Wanted to ride more, but the air was still and heavy. Came home and ate a PB&J sandwich.
Off to an afternoon of errands.

I had hauled away the blackberries back home in the neighbor's dump trailer on Sunday, then I loaded the big tools that wanted to travel upright, using the old forklift. That took a little strapping.

Monday morning I did the drive up and unloaded the drill press and air compressor, then the wheels came off.
I knew I had a fuel leak on the big excavator and thought it was a loose return fitting on an injector. Nope.
It was a split fitting. I called the dealers and found one the 110 miles back where I came from. The mini excavator was back there too, so I hedged my bets and ran back down in my car to bring it back up.
Normally I would just order parts and wait, but I have a city crew scheduled to tap the main and install the meter, and a paving crew right behind them to patch that hole and pave the driveway approach.
This morning I tried fixing the excavator and realized I needed more gaskets and parts and pieces. I got them from a mobile mechanic.
I also picked up all the double check and pressure reducing valve parts and pieces for the water service.
The paver dropped off his walk behind saw and I cut the asphalt for the driveway and water main excavation.

The irrigation water has been down for more than a week for the landlady and neighbors. I had offered the "system manager" who was the unfortunate fellow to have the 2" pipe going through his property some help with it.
He finally called me on that. I looked at the pictures of how he fixed the break that had failed again, and saw where he went wrong. I found the parts down south and picked them up on the same trip to get the mini and repair parts for the big excavator.
After saw cutting and fixing the big machine and getting construction signs for the road tomorrow and a load of pea gravel, we walked up there and I fixed it properly. What is one more thing on a heaping plate?

Got an offer on my house, which surprised me. It has only been on the market for a day and a half. 5% under my asking price, but a cash offer. Hoping it works out

Still relaxing for a whirlwind long weekend (of course, in retirement, every weekend is a long weekend ) of attending many social gatherings - 2 picnics, 2 fireworks shows, 2 dancing events, museum visit, and a movie.

Now debating if I should do the right thing and get some mowing done, or go golfing. Decision to be made within the next 30 minutes .

I was going to start the Driver's License steps for my new state but realized I'm traveling next week. I know the first thing the MV bureau does is trash the license for your previous state and then print out a temporary paper version for your new state, which will probably not get me through the TSA. I have a passport but I'm also renting a car and don't know if a temporary paper license will suffice.

Looks like a task for when I get back.
