What is your pet peeve of the day? -- 2021

Not a peeve, but endless amusement.
Many potholes in the roads around here, as result of frost heave etc.. ( it could be a peeve) Cars following too close to figure out why I navigate in a seemingly erratic manner.
It is to evade potholes.
Them, hitting them all. Takes them a few miles to figure out the method behind my seeming madness.

OK... this has gotten to me...

I have an old tablet and the cover has decided to break apart... so getting me a new one...

Go to Amazon to 'buy again'... well, not available... so start to look... I put in my specific tablet and get options for OTHER sizes... really?

Narrow it down and decide to buy one... get it and guess what? It does not put the tablet to sleep when you close it!! I did not know that you have to buy one that does it... thought all of them did...

SOOO, buy a different one that says it has magnets and will put it to sleep... got it delivered an hour ago and NO MAGNETS... none... it also does not put the tablet to sleep!!!

Looks like I can find one at the Wal Mart website... we will see when I order one...

But now I plan to return both of them from Amazon... I was going to eat the one as I had not read it correctly but when I did it on the next it still was wrong...

Brought MIL to an 8:30 eye dr appt. Dr showed up at 9:46.

I wonder what would have happened to me if I would have showed up for a work meeting more than an hour late.

I have a doc that does this all the time - 1 hour waits are routine no matter what time of day you book. But he's so good in many other ways vs other providers, that I just deal with it, as it's worth it to me.

The irony is if YOU, the patient, are 10-15 min late, many offices will cancel your appt and bill you as a no show - even when they're constantly late themselves.

I'll have to look for this.

I'll add one: "actually."

Actually seems to have taken over for literally.
"Perfect" is mine, as I'm finding it's the rep's go-to response on every customer service call center conversation lately:

What's your full name? "perfect"
What's your account number? "perfect"
What's your email? "perfect"

Drives me a bit batty.

Today's pet peeve:

Feedback emails. I purchased a pair of socks last week and got an email asking how was my experience. I spent an hour this morning cleaning old emails, and most of them were asking about my various purchasing eperiences. I avoid giving out my email, but if I signed up for discounts at a store I frequent, every single purchase generates an email. Enough! Who has time to read the responses anyway?

I got an email from Walmart a while back asking me to review my purchase of Northern Extra Strong and Soft bath tissue. Seriously? They want to know if I enjoy wiping my a$$?

Got one today from the hospital where I had an ultrasound on my neck last week. Wanted me to fill out a lengthy survey. Every time I go there, for anything, I get the same survey.

Same here. A while back I went to Home Depot and purchased one (1) 6 foot 1x2. I put it on a credit card tied to an online account there and they emailed a survey about the purchase experience.

No, I am not wasting my time on that.

I live within a mile of a harbor freight store and when I buy something there by the time I get home I have an email from them with my receipt.
Then a week or two later another email asking for a review.

People parking in the street when they have driveway and/or garage space available.

Around here potholes are multiplying very rapidly.
Weather has been bad enough that repairs are not possible anytime soon, rain, snow, freeze, rinse repeat. Often all three in the same day.
Hence the two seasons of roads and highways in SW PA, winter and construction.

No basements here and many folks park on the street. Garages are jam packed! 😄
Investing in storage companies would have been smart about 30 years ago. Not so sure anymore. I think we've seen peak storage. The kids like minimal living spaces. (Oh wait, maybe they have it all in their off-home storage. :) )

But seriously, they don't want books. They don't want dishes. They want a monitor on the wall, a phone, and a device. Maybe a rug to lay on. It is very different these days.

Yes, paper plates are in vogue with my daughter! And she has Mom's and Grandmom's vintage china (still in boxes in the garage).

I have decided to adopt a new peeve.

For a while frquented a restaurant. Nice and clean enough, reasonably good food a bit on the pricey side.
However, finally got tired of walking into the place, being confronted with the cash register, cashier and billboard with all their offerings. From which to choose what to get, tell the cashier, pay, then find a place to sit and wait for food and drink delivery.

Resolved: never to patronize a restsaurant where a billboard is to be read, pay first, find a place to sit and wait for the food delivery.
Oh, and they do have a tip jar at the register and expect a nice tip.

I'll put up with ordering an paying for coffe and croissant first. It is usually a very short wait. Tops 2 minutes. And, under $10.-.

Today's pet peeve:

Feedback emails.
Next I think they're going to ask me how satisfied I was with the air I breathed while in the store. These emails get quickly ignored and deleted.

Today, I received a snail mail from a seller on Amazon where I bought ink cartridges. They promised to send me a $35 gift certificate if I left a 5-star review with photos. There was also a warning not to mention the offer in the review. Heck, the ink cartridges only cost $49.99. Needless to say, I didn't scan their QR code and the letter went into the recycle bin. I should report them to Amazon, but it's probably not worth my trouble.

Similarly, there was a sign at my car dealer saying if you left a 5-star review, your name would go into the drawing for a free service. Yeah, I see you are really interested in honest feedback. OTOH, I don't blame the people at the desk; it's the home office demanding glowing reviews or else.

My DW took her car into Pep Boys for her smog certificate. It passed. Apparently my email is on the account. I've gotten an email every day for a week asking to do a review that should "only take 3 minutes".

New peeve....stuff that breaks.

Since Jan 1, 2025 -

First week in January the garage door opener stopped working. I looked at the purchase records and it was 20 years old but had a Lifetime Warranty. I called Genie and they walked me through some troubleshooting steps and said the error code was not fixable, they will send me a new unit. Very good customer service! In the meantime we released the door from the opener and opened and closed it manually. It's the original wooden door from 1955, very heavy but nicely balanced so we could open and close it. We texted each other if we were coming home and needed the door opened. Genie sent a full replacement including remotes, an outdoor wall unit and a wall button for the door to the house (attached garage). I paid $40 for shipping and $100 cash to our son for him to do the installation with DH's help.

Mid January the microwave shut off during use and had tripped the breaker. We reset the breaker and everything was fine until it happened again. Very odd but it was still working fine otherwise. Then it happened a 3rd time I started shopping for a new one. I'm very microwave oven dependent as I like hot things HOT and reheat coffee and food. I also use the sensor feature often. I know what I like and I'm the one who uses most of the features. I found what I like at Lowes and then $15 less at Amazon and it arrived before the old one died completely. $150 with tax.

Next was the clothes dryer. No symptoms until the belt broke. We've been through this before (18 months for the last belt) so we knew what to do. I found the belt locally at Menards and bought two because I know this will happen again. $22 for both.

Then we noticed our drip coffee maker was producing less coffee than the amount of water we put in. Very odd and the only thing we could figure out was that it was losing enough steam out of the top that it affected amount the coffee being produced. We already had an extra one so tossed the old one. $0.00.

Then last week our combination salt grinder/pepper grinder stopped grinding pepper. I cleaned it out and tried it again and no go. It felt like the gears were skipping. It's an Olde Thompson with a Lifetime Guaranty. I called and all they needed was the model number and my name and address. Another good customer service experience! $0.00.

The latest thing to break was the Ice Maker in our side by side refrigerator. It's a Whirlpool from 2019. I had a 5 year extended warranty that expired in May of 2024. The thing was making ice just fine, but the dispenser would not dispense. From Youtube and Reddit I learned that there is a known issue (and class action lawsuit) about the wiring that runs from the bottom of the freezer to the freezer door. Yep, ours looked just like the pictures online of the broken wires. DH found one broken wire and one ready to go. He patched in new wires to extend the existing, soldered and wrapped in electrical tape. Everything works now. DH is a little sore from crouching on the floor but he enjoys electrical work so this was a good project for him. $0.00

So none of this was expensive, just annoying, especially the garage door opener being out of commission. I'm pleased that some companies still answer their phones and honor their warranties.

So this is a peeve, but with a positive ending.
