What is your pet peeve of the day? -- 2021

Grocery store register people who are clueless about bagging items. It's like they've never shopped for their own groceries. No, the chips and expensive eggs do not belong flat on the bottom with heavy bottles of laundry detergent on top. Even if lightweight items are durable, it's better for the heavy stuff to go on the bottom because that way there's less chance the bag will tip over during the trip home. I'll unload the heavy items first onto the belt, light items last, but some will resist packing until they get to the light items. Maybe they want me to pack, except if I'd wanted to do that I'd have used the self-checkout.

I always bag my own and I always unload my cart onto the belt in the order I intend to bag to streamline that.

Large Capital Gains distributions from a supposedly "tax effecient" mutual fund.

Got my 1099 today....grrr I should have put everything in an index EFT instead.

Public restroom paper towel dispensers where you have to pull the end of the paper to dispense a sheet. But the cheap paper is so incredibly thin and flimsy that it doesn’t have the strength to be pulled on, especially with wet hands. It just dissolves in your fingers.

The TP is worse.

Peeve O the day, 1 set of legs for some plastic shelves was missing when I unwrapped it after it sat in storage a couple years. So either I find them, or go buy some plastic pipe of a certain diameter. If I buy the pipe I will likely find the legs as soon as I cut the pipe to size.

USPS.

Should be eliminated. But not until they find my package that was mailed 11 days ago from a small town in New York to me in northern Illinois. Tracking shows it to be in the Indianapolis hub - the same hub under investigation for lost packages, late deliveries.

If I was starting over today, I’d ben100% index funds. That’s what I advised our daughter to do when she started her investing life.
me too!!

I'd learn more about ETF's and I wouldn't trust anything any FA ever told me. Been burned ever time.

You mean you still have humans and cash registers? I feel like if Kroger wants me to check myself out then they owe me a benefit plan. :) I do it anyway.

But back to your original point. Even worse are the kids who look at a piece of broccoli and ask me what it is. It doesn’t have a code and I have to wonder if they’ve ever seen one before.

I will use self checkout at every opportunity. Unfortunately stores are making that harder and harder. They’re limiting the number of items. It’s 20 at my supermarket. I always have more than that when doing our weekly shopping. Even worse the system is set up to force you to bag your items on the platform rather than in your cart. That makes it slower than a cashier which defeats the purpose.

We love and always use self checkout at BJs. No item limit. No need to even remove items from the cart. Just use the scan gun, zap everything, and be on our way. We don’t bag anything until we get to the car.

Intuit tax software.
I go to file a state return which costs $25.
The software knows I have a $10 credit, so I expect to input my CC numbers and be charged on my CC when I submit the tax return. That is how H&R Block does it.

I click , and instead it wants me to sign in with my intuit account values. But it doesn't work. Then I have it send me code to reset password and it fails to allow me and locks me out for 15 minutes. This repeatedly happens and then I make supper.
After supper I go to intuit.com, and click forgot password, they want my driver's license photographed and then allow me to change my password.

Then I can go back to the tax program and use my intuit login to file the State tax return 😡

Tomorrow I get to file another State return, can hardly wait :nonono:

Bad sound on TV programs. I refuse to use the CC feature because I watch TV to see the program and don't think it too much to expect the dialogue to be intelligible without CC.

Yes. The mid range where people speak is often hard to hear. Sadly, It’s not just sound, I also have problems
With the regrettable tendency to film dark scenes for “effect”, leaving the viewer wondering who is doing what. Or did the studio not pay their electric bill?

Bad sound, bad lighting. Both are guaranteed to make me go elsewhere for entertainment.

Websites and apps that ask questions like "Do you want notifications" and the only options are "Yes" and "Maybe later". What happened to "No, never, don't ever bother me by asking again"? In fact some sites do have a box for "Don't ask again" but it seems fewer and fewer do. And btw, the default for many is to send notifications, which I also hate.

At a place I worked someone wrote on the dispenser "Dry hands first".

Too true. As a result, I sometimes resort to old TV shows. only to discover their sound has been changed. For example, I'd never watched Kojak so gave it a try. The first episode's sound was OK, but the second episode had effects WAY loud and voices WAY quiet. It was unwatchable.

Don't let the tax tail wag the dog.

Why should I ignore taxes? If I can optimize the solution by considering taxes, I'll do it. I understand that sometimes this phrase is used appropriately, but a lot of people use it when the taxes are much larger than a tail.

It is amazing how people will cling to a catch phrase and let it dictate their lives even when it is inappropriate to their circumstances.

The Weather Normalization Adjustment many utility companies now add to the bills is just insane. When we have a warmer than normal winter, the natural gas company adds $30 to $50 to the bill so their revenues and profits stay the same even though they sell, and the customers use, less gas. This winter we had a much colder than normal winter and I was credited a whopping $1.51. The Public Utility Commission has actually agreed to this, so we know who's interests they are looking out for.

Two cars pull up to a light. The car on the left has to wait, but they pull up too far, all the way into the crosswalk blocking the vision of my car who is OK to turn right on red.

I suspect people who know what the adage means know how and when to heed it. And if they don't, then it doesn't hurt me.

I have and use the Costco app and the Kroger app. I don’t like that I must use a Kroger loyalty account to get the weekly sale’s prices. Today we went to a new grocery store that just opened in our area. DH refused to sign up for their loyalty program. I figured, “why not.” I filled out the information, but I used my house phone number. I couldn’t sign up without getting a notification sent to my cell phone number. Nope, I don’t give out my cell phone number. Guess we won’t be going to that store very often.

First you ask for the floor mgr. Then his boss, the store assistant mgr., then her boss the store manager. You might not get what you want but you'll alert the store that you aren't buying in to their petty grift. If enough people whine, the store will change its policy.

It helps to have a cart full of stuff - especially perishable stuff that you can leave AFTER you have rung it all up but not paid for it yet. I'm (almost) ashamed that I've done this.

BUT as a (former) business owner, a good business person WANTS to know what her customers think of the store and its policies.

The local Walmart has installed locked cabinets for a large portion of the personal care products and OTC drugs. Today I wanted to buy some after shave balm. It was in a locked cabinet. A $3 item! There were a half dozen people standing waiting for the one guy who had the ability to unlock a cabinet. He was occupied with three women who could not make up their minds on which mascara to buy. I heard him tell someone that he was the only one unlocking the cabinets today, all the way from pharmacy to cosmetics.
Honestly, I can see locking up $30 wrinkle cream, but a $3 bottle of shave balm??!! I left without any.

And then retail store managers whine about people buying such things on Amazon. I know I have, for that reason and often the store is "hit or miss" as to whether it's in stock that day. So it's just easier to order it online.
