What is your pet peeve of the day? -- 2021

We had a hail storm last night. Mostly 1/8" hailstones, but enough to pile up against walls and such.

The 4th roving roofer just rang my bell. I also got a text from one that somehow had my name and number. They are like locusts devouring hail storms.

Edit: 5 8 9 doorbell rings now.

Edit: OK, so I answered the door and asked number 9 how they all knew where to go. There's an app for that! He said he was certified with GAF (shingle manufacturer) and they had an app that notifies their vendors/users of hail storms.

Ordered flowers to be delivered to my sister in law (her DM passed recently). Ordered directly from the local florist. $10 delivery fee. OK, not too bad. Then a $6 "service" fee. I wonder what "service" beyond delivery I received??

I quit volunteering along time ago. My neighbor and I used to work a local Special Olympics as part of a fraternal organization we belonged to. Over the course of 6 years, I have never seen such a disorganized event. Thousands of volunteers, hundreds of participants and families, and events we're all short staffed. Groups of folks getting their pics taken as hardworking volunteers.
My church asked for volunteers to help unload a tractor trailer of supplies for the Lenten Fish Fry'. Twenty men showed up, I was the only one to bring a dolly. So it was me wheeling the items on my dolly, 15 guys loading me up and 4 guys unloading and putting away. No one offered to give me a break and again, pics were taken of the group for the church bulletin, and somehow, the guy with the dolly didn't make the shots. Now I didn't volunteer to make a photo shot, or see my smiling face on the cover of the bulletin but these guys were.
So after 20 years, I quit, I have better ways to waste my time.
That's really unfortunate. My preference is always to be behind the scenes when volunteering, either setting up before an event or cleaning up afterwards. I'm an early bird, so setup is preferred. However, I can sympathize with your frustration at disorganization. It's something that discourages me from volunteering with some local organizations.

I've listed this before, but it still gets me a little irritated......Movies/TV shows that have scenes so dark that you can't see who, where, or what. Yes, it might be a night scene, or a dark room scene.....but to me it has no purpose if the viewer can't see who's hand it is, or what the weapon looks like. Please cast some kind of light on the importance of that particular couple seconds of the program.

I finally quit going. Can't see and can't hear. What am I supposed to do? "Feel?" "Smell?" "Taste?" No, thanks.

First, thank you CO-guy for doing that. We need more. I had a fellow help me clean up yesterday. So appreciated.

As for quitting due to disorganization: I get it. It is one reason I've backed way off on Habitat for Humanity. I'm currently working with a small organization where I control the jobs and the volunteer group size. ("Signup Genius" is a lifesaver.) The big problem is that this makes me a leader and I get a little burned out now and then. Leading is too much like w*rk.

The upside is that I like my group, they are loyal. They appreciate the behind the scenes stuff I do. My problem is sometimes staff ask me to lead a different group. These are the groups that unsort screws and leave trash. I've told staff I can't lead groups like that anymore. They can have it.

I used to have this problem before I got a new LG OLED TV. Now I can see everything perfectly.

Movies that open with 2 or 3 minutes of "Produced By" and then list 6 or 7 collaborating studios that created the movie.

In fact, it's become a meme.

The local Walmart has installed locked cabinets for a large portion of the personal care products and OTC drugs. Today I wanted to buy some after shave balm. It was in a locked cabinet. A $3 item! There were a half dozen people standing waiting for the one guy who had the ability to unlock a cabinet. He was occupied with three women who could not make up their minds on which mascara to buy. I heard him tell someone that he was the only one unlocking the cabinets today, all the way from pharmacy to cosmetics.
Honestly, I can see locking up $30 wrinkle cream, but a $3 bottle of shave balm??!! I left without any.
I do almost all of my Walmart shopping from their website, then do a pick-up. So nice not to have to deal with locked cabinets and touch any of the things that the other patrons get their grimy fingers on. I swear, I've never seen so many dirty fingered kids than I have in a Walmart. It's as if they've been camping for a week without washing. My order comes in a bag handled by an associate wearing mask and gloves.
My order today consists of diet soda, Polska Kielbasa, and a dill pickle seasoning packet. (I have extra eggs and we pickle them as snacks.) I will make the pick-up on my way to a Dr. appt. or on the way home.

OH, I've also noticed that prices are usually cheaper online than in the store. I guess they are trying to reward ordering goods. My bet is that all stores will go full-on order only so they are sure to get paid and the customer only leaves with what they paid for.

In our area we haven't seen too many things locked up at stores, but the other day, I was in the check-out at CVS. A guy bought a large number of different items and when the check out girl finished with what he had, said he still needed batteries - that were locked away. She left the check out (with several of us waiting) and got his batteries. THEN he paid a couple of hundred dollars in varying sized bills. I was next in line and I waited for over 10 minutes while this guy checked out. I hate that.

I tried doing this about 2 years ago and again last summer. The first time the waiting list was 8 or 9 days, the most recent time the waiting list was about 6 days, meaning I could place my order and go pick it up in 6 days. That's not going to work for me.

I really wish I could make this work for me. I was new to customer pickups so maybe that put me at the bottom of the lists, not sure.

To add to the current discussion, my latest pet peeve:

Newer HVAC units fail earlier than the old R-22 units.

You used to be able to get 15 to 30 years out of a unit. That seemingly has been shortened to 7 to 15.

Correct! And, according to my HVAC guy, now that units using R410 are also no longer allowed to be manufactured (as of 1/1/25), it is likely to get even worse with the new generation of systems. Evidently, the NEW refrigerant is actually flammable, so there are a lot more safety features needed and every additional valve, sensor, etc is just another part that can break or malfunction. Buckle up!

Wow!
Not only are my orders same-day pickup, but I have several options on the hour I want to pick up in order to combine trips. I can also choose another day if that works better for me.
Also, I can add to my order within 2 hours of pick up in case I forgot something.

The more they "improve" HVAC the more expensive it is and shorter the time it lasts. How do they manage that and why do we put up with it??

Relocated....its the most travel I've done in a while:

This is not a 'Peeve' per se, (more of a quizzical observation), but I didn't know where else to put it, and it certainly doesn't merit its own thread:

We don't watch TV, (although we do watch movies, etc, on our TV), but we often see brief vids online, (most often various politicians), with people 'signing' in the background.

I don't sign, and currently don't know anyone who does, but I have in days gone by had some passing exposure to it. The conversations I witnessed seemed to be straightforward hand signals, but nowadays the background 'signers' appear to be participating in inebriated games of charades, complete with overacted facial (or should it be 'farcical') expressions.

Since Close Captioning is readily available, it just makes me wonder if the pols are using the clowns to distract, rather than inform, the audience.

I have noticed this too and find them distracting as can be.

Yep, holding on to my ~15-year-old, R-410 unit until it can't be repaired anymore.

IIRC, R-410 is just a blend of R-32 plus a flame retardant.

So I wonder if straight R-32 would work just as well...

Don’t bother watching the show “Severance”. It has basically two lighting schemes. Inside the office, it’s well lit. The rest of the show is presented in a very dark lighting scheme. Very irritating.
