What is your pet peeve of the day? -- 2021

All the hackers and coughers on my cruise ship and associate bus (erm, "coach" or "panoramic") tours. Not a thought to covering one's mouth, just spewing phlegm everywhere. As soon as I got off the plane in my home town two weeks ago I felt a cold coming on. I'm still dealing with it.

We still have a closet full of regular masks, KN95 and N95 masks from COVID times. I still pull one out for occasions such as that.

Bue-ee's does their homework before building one of these mega stores. They have lot's of stuff, all over priced, and an absolutely incredible volume of traffic. (all the time). So they can afford to pay their employees more.
Very interesting and innovative business. Still privately held by the two founders, one of them had the Beaver moniker growing up. They’ve been quite aggressive about adding Tesla chargers to stores built within the last 6 years, so I tend to follow what they are up to. Currently my eye is on Boerne TX.

There’s no Waffle House less than a day’s drive from my home. What will I tell my foreign friends when they travel to visit me?
I used to really like WH and looked forward to going there when we were in FL, but the last time we went a number of years ago it just wasn't as good as it used to be. Maybe we caught them at an off time or a bad day but we haven't been back. I guess we should give them another try. The nearest one to us is about 45 minutes away in Delaware.

As for you, I guess you need to pick some other quintessential American dining experience like Olive Garden or Chili's (not that I would willingly go to either of those places).

Same with me.

"The closest corporate Waffle House locations to your location are located in central Indiana or near St. Louis, Missouri, roughly 7 to 8 hours away by car (approximately 450+ miles)"

I've eaten at a few while I was w*rking on the road, but DW has never been to one.

facebook marketplace's search function is terrible. It seems to be based on what it thinks I want to see rather than what I actually am searching for. If I'm searching for 1 particular item I'll see all kinds of random things and lots of them are based on what I've searched for in the past.
Another FBMP peeve that I've encountered twice in recent weeks. Someone reaches out about an item I'm selling, maybe we negotiate a price, and then I don't hear from them again. Except 2 or 3 weeks later, they suddenly message me as if no time has passed and they're just continuing the conversation.

On May 31 I got a message from a woman interested in some mugs I was selling. I answered right away and made her a better offer. She responded on June 23 asking where I was located (which is clearly stated in my listing) and I answered right away. Nothing until today, July 6, when she messaged again checking how many I have.

No apology. No "sorry for not getting back to you sooner". Just messaging weeks later as if nothing had happened. People are weird.

Egads!!!! Not Olive Garden. My foreign friends are mostly Italian. I’m thinking of a diner North of me. Fast food would probably be a Chic Fil A.

The best WAFFLE Houses are in the Deep South, IMO. Smaller towns in Mississippi, Georgia, Texas, etc.

It is interesting... I do not go to Waffle House at all.. they did build one a mile or so from me and my daughter somehow (I assume with her friends) thinks it is 'horrible' and 'sketchy'... said she would not get caught dead in one...

I do not go to IHOP or Denney's either... just not the food I care for..

I am OK with Olive Garden but do like Chili's...

When they first added charging stations to our local Buc-ees, I never saw any cars out there. Now there always seems to be several EV's parked out there. Times are changing. :)

One of the earliest Buc-ee’s with a Tesla supercharger was in Wharton TX approaching the greater Houston metropolitan area. We would stop there heading east. It’s a far smaller Buc-ee’s than the monsters they are building these days.

Pet peeve & confession.

I'm sitting through a four hour retirement webinar (401a, 457b, DROP, etc). Our webinar invite and registration asked if a guest would be attending so I Invited DW. She kind of blew it off/shut it down with the response that all the discussion and preparation around retirement is stressful and depressing.

She even questioned why I would invite her to the webinar after we already attended a meeting with a retirement rep. I explained that I invited her so she could be fully aware of survivor benefits. Plus her pension plan is nearly identical to mine so it would have been educational for her. Her questioning my rationale demonstrated her unwillingness to attend so I've informally retracted the invitation. Let it not be said that I coerced her into attending retirement webinars, especially when it wasn't initially my idea and I asked only because registration asked if a guest would attend.

Pet peeve: Seemingly my diligent preparation for retirement is overly cumbersome and exhausting for her. However, I've worked 29.53 years to get to this point (full time with part time jobs).

Confession: I'm not inclined to make myself smaller so she can feel more comfortable about not being as prepared.

Pet peeve: I'm sitting through the last webinar prior to turning in my application for retirement feeling unsupported but I'm determined regardless. Her stress response generally shuts down further conversations (not solely on this topic but other topics as well).

There is thread somewhere, probably more than one in fact, on how much spouses are involved in financial decisions and retirement planning. I think you'll find that you aren't alone.

Neighbors who start their loud diesel trucks early in the morning, then go back into the house and let it idle for 15-20 minutes or more. Does it take that long to heat or cool the cab?

Check your local laws. Idling is illegal in many locations.

HM... yep, you cannot make your spouse responsible for doing what is needed...

My spouse cannot even pay bill online!! She will tell me that I NEED to show her but she never wants to come when I am paying bills.. and when she did she got mad at me...

I told her off and on she needs to know this stuff so she can mange when I die... her response 'just don't die'... yea, wish I could manage that!!

I just made sure we had a decent FA that I do not use at Schwab and/or Fidelity so they can help her... hopefully they do not fleece her but I will be dead so not my problem...

The interwebs tell me that the nearest Waffle House is 130 miles away. I say that's just fine, thanks.

Here in America we drive on the right side of the road. Generally speaking, that tends to spill over to walking on the right like in stores or malls or sidewalks. It's kind of an unwritten rule to keep to the right when possible. My pet peeve is encountering folks who didn't get that memo. I just got back from the supermarket and ran into (almost literally) several people cruising down the aisles with their carts on their left side as I came up the other way on my right. Then they seemed annoyed at me for being in their way.

This reminds me of a funny story from this past weekend. Spouse and I were in the midwest visiting her parents. Yesterday morning we were chatting with my MIL/FIL over breakfast and the topic of our FI came up in the context of our future plans. DW is well aware of our finances since she takes the lead on filing our taxes each year, and we do discuss investment and asset values along with NW.

So, DW tells her mother, "I know financially we 'should' have enough, but I'm still not sure." I then added that a comp to our home had sold within the past year (selling our home in the next few years is part of our retirement plan).

My MIL asked, "How much was the comp and what's your mortgage balance?" When I responded, "Over $2M and almost zero," she looked at her daughter and said, "Stop worrying. You're set!"

FIL then asked, "What about retirement accounts?" When said, "already into seven figures," he almost fell out of his chair before saying, "You have nothing to worry about." For context DW is 46. She plans to continue in her career for the next 4 years and, although I still consult, much of it goes to charity.

I agree. Stores should paint big arrows on the floor showing this. Then they would be like the arrows in the parking lots and 'Do Not Enter' signs on the doors that everybody else ignores, too. /s

Edited to show semi-sarcasm. Nobody cares anymore.

You've got to be kidding! Would you also complain if someone kept their cart in their "lane" but had the temerity to cross the aisle on foot and block the "throughway" on your side of the "street" to grab something off the shelf?

I remember during Covid that stores DID have painted arrows on the floor directing the traffic flow a certain way. Essentially, aisles became one way "streets". I relished violating that asinine regulation.
