What was your happiest moment today?

We have a local corporate athletic event in which I've participated since 2004. The team always loved me because I was in an older age category and you get points for the team if you place in the top 3 in your event in your age category. I'm horrible at team sports but good at endurance ones- they even talked me into the triathlon (1/2- mile swim, 12 miles on the bike, 5K walk/run) and I enjoyed it.

They stopped during COVID and when things opened up again, breathlessness from my mitral valve prolapse slowed me down (and made me concerned about somehow making it worse even though my cardiologist encouraged staying active).

Surgery was last August. I'm doing a ton of cardio, burning more calories as I increase effort levels on the machines, and hitting higher average heart rates. I just got the e-mail this morning with a sign-up link. I'm now in the 70+ age group where the competition really thins out. Signed up for the 5K and 10K, and a 50-meter swim. They don't do the triathlon anymore- probably just as well since I think that would be overdoing it. And I didn't sign up for the half-marathon. :)

On my way back from a hike with the pups. Since I was already dusty, I decided to stop into a self-service car wash to spray off the winter grime on the vehicle.

Welp, today was my lucky day! The car wash was empty but someone must have stuck a $20 bill in the machine because it was on and there was nearly $10 left in credit. Winning!

Similar thing happened to me a few years ago. Went to a place that used tokens to run the washers, and started off at the machine where I bought $5 of tokens.

Then went to the wash bay and found $8 worth of tokens stacked neatly on top of the control device. I used the $5 worth that I had bought, and left the $8 worth alone so it would make someone else's day.

My dentist said it was OK to go back to Orangetheory for work outs. Booked Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before they all expired.

He texted me his approval from Paris. :)

When I got back to the house after driving the tractor around the area and tilled 5 gardens....
Well technically after the 3rd sip of beer.

Found $50!

On our morning walk around the neighborhood, found a $5 on the ground. Then a $20, then another! Backtracked figured we'd re-cover the block in case there was more and found another $5. All were lying on the ground/swale/mailbox areas along about 3 or 4 houses. Figure someone didn't know they'd knocked it out of their pocket rummaging for something, or put it on the roof of the car before driving off? Windy day. Who knows.

We kept our eyes out for anyone who might be looking for it, but nope. Oh well!

I woke this morning to find an email from my Health Care System. Yesterday, I had undergone an ultrasound of my neck. The results were available. With anticipation and a bit of trepidation, I opened the results. "No suspicious lymph node changes."

5 years ago, I had to have my thyroid removed. After 4 hours in surgery, it came out in pieces due to cancer. Because the cancer had spread to my lungs, the 5 year survival prediction was (wait for it) 50:50 with treatment. (A favorite movie of mine - with Anna Kendrick - is called 50:50).

I had follow up I131 treatment - the radioactive Iodine is attracted to any thyroid (thyroid like) tissues and (in theory) the irradiation from the Iodine destroys any remaining cancer. I will get a chest CT scan soon to follow the nodules in my lungs. If they continue to remain stable, then I can relax a bit more about my chances of a long(er) retirement.

The start of a good day, indeed.

We got the renewal for our homeowners’ insurance policy and found only a small increase in premium, about 4%. Whew!

I was out for a mid-day walk with the dogs, it was a little chilly for just a sun shirt, and then the sun came out from the clouds and fixed everything.

This is wonderful news!

Beautiful sunny day. My daffodils, tulips and white lilies are in bloom, iris and yellow callas coming up, buds on lavender showing. Another couple weeks I can plant some zinnias in the planters on the front and back deck. Love my flowers.
I will maybe try some veggies again this year, not much luck the past few years. Either very little produce, or the birds/squirrels/bunnies get to them.
Years ago, I had prolific tomatoes, blueberries, strawberries, zucchini 🤷‍♀️

Woke up to find the loaf of sour dough bread I prepped last night had risen nicely. I was concerned because my starter seemed a little sluggish. I shaped the dough and put it in the proofing basket in the fridge for a 24 hour rest, and will bake first thing tomorrow.

Our daughter comes home from Denver for a weekend visit tomorrow and our "thing" is I almost always have a fresh loaf of bread on the cutting board when she arrives. So I got to anticipate her smile while I was shaping the bread.

When my brother sent me a picture of our late grandparents house. Look at those azaleas!

Beautiful day here in Portland. The kind that brings out all the smiles after rain & gray skies for months. I have been swimming at the high school pool a few times a week. Decided to ride the bike. 74 degrees & a slight wind. Almost 28 miles. Went across the Willamette on a ferry to farm country. (I love riding through the fields) I was looking for a General Store but my map loaded incorrectly (user error) and I missed it. I searched on my phone but was OOS. So circled back home.

In the evening I went to the local library to hear a cowboy poet friend do his thing. He's pretty fun. Of course he had merch so I bought a couple books

Got home & had a whisky & cigar sitting on the porch.

I can't pick out one best moment....it was a very good day

Woke up and realized today marks the start of another year of retirement. Too early to remember if it's been 14 or 15 years. Man that was quick..

Happiest yesterday: Getting through a breast MRI (screening due to family history) for the first time since my heart surgery, where they used an atrial clip that needs special MRI settings. (MRIs use magnets so powerful they can rip anything containing ferrous metals out of your body. One woman I know has a MedAlert bracelet inscribed "No MRIs".) A friend had told me this facility was all over the issue and even wanded you before you went in. She was right- they collected all the info beforehand. I worked in insurance too long- I still breathed a sigh of relief when the machine started up and nothing rocketed out of my body.

Happiest moment today- test results came back negative. I had no reason to expect otherwise but I never take that for granted.

Looked up my Vanguard statement(s) for first time in a year.

I'm very happy.

I tried again to reach the guy at the materials quarry, and finally did. Got lined up for delivery of 9 tons of pea gravel Monday bright and early. Yay!

the only thing missing is the crew to spread 9 tons of pea gravel while you sit under an umbrella w/a cold drink
