Whats the story behind your avatar choice?

I don't understand the purpose of avatars. I come to read, learn, ask questions, maybe have fun in some threads, and someday if I learn enough, maybe even help someone else with their question. What purpose does the little picture serve in that?
It’s nice personalized decoration, and I recognize an avatar before I recognize a name.

Nice!
Ambergriz? Or Caulker?
Ambergris, close to the north bridge. San Pedro has gotten so much busier in the last 15 years. We now vaca in a small coastal village on the mainland. Recently they paved the coastal road so now that village is getting "discovered" too.

I too enjoy jumping to the posters whose responses I find most helpful, and their cute avatars make that easier. But then, some like to change their avatar just for variety, and that messes me up.

I find the avatars, including that turkey, helpful in that way, too. I'm still a newbie, but maybe if I get to the stage where I have learned enough here that I start giving back--being one of those "posters whose responses I find most helpful"--an avatar of my own will be useful to others.

In Oct. 2024 the northern lights were visible in Illinois. My neighbor went out on a country road and took this photo. Unbelievable. There were many more with different light hues but this one stood out.

Just one of the wild turkey toms in the state park next door.
Approaching the state park entrance today on bicycle, about a dozen turkey toms trotted past us. Wow, they are really starting to show their breeding plumage!

I've liked James Bond movies since I saw Thunderball when I was a kid. (I also like the spy genre in general.)

There is a scene in the movie Skyfall when Bond meets his new quartermaster, ("Q") at an art gallery. Bond derisively insults Q but the youngster matches insults with Bond. Q says, "I can do more damage with my laptop sitting in my pajamas before my first cup of Earl Gray than you can do in a year in the field."

It got me thinking that Q's laptop must be a very special machine. At the time the movie came out I was building my own PC's. I thought the handle "Q's Laptop" would be pretty cool for an internet forum. I kept it in the back of my mind until I used it here. The irony is that I don't even own a laptop.

BTW, the Bond meets new Q scene can be seen here. It has some old vs. new generation observations.

Over the years, I've used cartoon characters as avatars in several other forums. George Jetson is the other one who comes to mind, though I've also used cartoon-ized photos of myself.

It is a Withered Wojak one of the many Wojak Meme characters. It portrays my current state of mind in regards to ER uncertainties.

About

Withered Wojak, also known as Void Wojak and Depressed Wojak, refers to a black and white hatched Wojak, distinguished by the character's eyes being completely obscured by shade. Starting in April 2018, the image has been used online to convey feelings of sadness, dejection and hopelessness.

Look for one, load it to your profile and you may understand.

I joined multiple forums around the same time and didn't feel like trying too hard to come up with usernames and I was in a fruits/desserts phase, so the username came first.

If you're on the forum enough you spot people by their avatar faster than from the username.
That's one practical reason in addition to the more whimsical side.

Exactly. And I am name challenged (horrible at remembering names!) but very visual. I remember the avatar photos way easier than the name, and can find my favorite posters faster that way.

I never really thought about people's avatars, or lack thereof, until just now reading this thread.
So I edited mine from the letter A to show a 2007 sunset photo I took from Mallory Square in Key West.

It looks better in full size.

I found this online - wanting to match my BeanCounter identity. This photo makes me smile because I inherited my grandmother's comptometer. She used it for many years as head of Payroll for the LA Times (and was really fast with her calculations)! Sadly it mostly just gathers dust on my shelf now.

You can attach a picture to your post...it looks pretty cool by zooming in on your avatar.

So I see a lot of interesting avatars and was curious why you peeps chose yours. Is there a story or meaning behind yours? My current one is from a black light poster I had growing up. Its from a 1975 poster called Super Shark. Its a bit of nostalgia of the good old teenage days.

I actually found a smaller version of the poster on EBay and bought it and had it framed.

Mine is one of my hobbies on one of my Favorite trails in Moab Utah. This photo is an optional run most bypass called Hells Gate, Here is a wider view since you can only fit so much in an Avatar, It reminds me that sometimes a little excitement is good for the soul :)

Mine isn't an avatar but is a picture of my "Midnight Angel" which is a Black 2007 Yamaha Royal Star Venture motorcycle, which has carried me on many adventures thru the years.

I have always been a fan of sports cars. Hence the Ferrari avatar. Along the way I owned more than a few Austin Healys, Triumphs, Porsches and others, but, never a Ferrari.
Currently own a 2023 Soul Red Mazda MX-5 Club with the BBR package.
Also, raced a Formula Vee racecar in an a earlier life.
