When To Replace High Mileage Car?

Heh, heh, DW "limped" home from Krogers one day when a tie rod broke. One tire was more or less non functional and left a black streak for half a mile. But she made it home. I don't know how. If a car will move, she'll run it until it won't move any more. Could be smoke (or fire) coming out of it and she'd still drive it. Fortunately, we no longer drive such clunkers any more, so haven't had to deal with the issue recently.
Sounds close to my DW. She drove a flat tire once knowingly. She made it home fine but I can't say the same for tire and rim.

Well, we did it!!! Bought the RX 450h+ plug in hybrid... replaced a vehicle with 124K miles...

LOVE the EV driving... I can see what the EV crowd here means... but I am not yet convinced to go all EV... have not really driven it much so will have to come back later to give an update...

Maybe more of a convenience than safety feature but one improvement that I’ve really come to appreciate is the rear view (backup) camera and even better with the sensors for oncoming cross traffic.
I love the 360 degree view when parking & pulling out -- I learned to parallel park in NYC, so I can do it, but I am often annoyed if I'm a tiny bit off from where I wanted to be. I also use the smart cruise control almost all the time, it's as close as I need to self-driving.

Late to this thread. We have donated 2 old cars this year. We had a 2005 Subaru Forester that older son was driving. About 160k miles but it had a cracked muffler and several other in diagnosed problems. When son moved to to Berkeley to finish his undergrad he no longer needed a car. So we donated it. It did have a backup camera added after we bought it... Son wanted to be able Bluetooth his music and the new stereo from crutchfield had both features.

The other old car we recently donated was our Scooby Van. 2000 Dodge ram Van. 180k miles. Unfortunately, it did leave us on the side of the road 2 states away from home. Transmission would fail (spin/not engage) after about 100 feet. We tried replacing every thing but the actual transmission (sensors, wiring, etc). because that was too expensive.

Younger son drives a 1999 Ford f150. About 210k miles. Indestructible. We've done some minor repairs, never more than $500. Son plans to drive it even after graduation.

Hubby and I are sharing the "new" car. 2019 RAV4. Only 34k miles.

I'm stuck on Volvos. Had a Volvo wagon I bought used in 1999 & put 290k miles on it. I was a bit disappointed I didn't get to 300k miles. But it was putting inky black fluid out he tailpipe & I strongly suspected it would not pass an inspection. Next was a 2005 SUV. That got to 330k miles. I sold it to an employee at about $1k. He drove it for a couple years. The AWD was out or I would have kept driving it. Then a 2 year experiment w a Volvo wagon. It wasn't quite big enough & I really didn't like getting in/out of a car that sat so low. Back to the medium size SUV which is perfect about 90% of the time. I'm creeping up on 100k miles. I'm thinking about the all electric medium SUV as possibly my last car. I'm hoping to do another Overseas Delivery but it's hard to say what the manufacturing situ will be

Check out this Volvo driver. Unfortunately, the story is also about his passing after driving his Volvo (wait for it) 3,260,257 miles.

He never had a thought to replace his high-mileage car. What a guy! What a car!!

Wow just googled this....unreal.....mileage.

Gordon, then a teacher living in Long Island, New York, bought the cherry red coupé on Friday 30 June 1966, for $4,150, then the equivalent of a year’s salary. By the following Monday, he brought it back to the dealer for its first service – having clocked up 1,500 miles over the weekend.

He didn’t look back – Gordon genuinely loved driving his car. Combining a long daily commute with a penchant for epic roadtrips at the weekend, he’d racked up a million miles by 1987. In 2002 he hit 2 million miles and in 2013 notched 3 million miles in the Kenai Peninsula, near Anchorage in Alaska (which is where he’s pictured below).

Heh, heh, sorry, I had intended to put a site on that post. Glad you found a good one.

I love that P1800. But my true love is the 122. I have come close to buying one on www.bringatrailer But I don't have garage room & don't want to pay for a storage spot. However I could be persuaded

Cool car too. I like the way this guy narrates his videos. His Miata one is classic...its the best!

The rigs I drive now are considered venerable. The TDI beetle has 192K. It has rattles inside that are annoying, I had to replace the door handles with aftermarket units. I put brakes and shocks and bearings and whatnot on it on the neighbors lift about a year ago, so the rolly things are good to go.
The 2007 Ram has 308K. I rebuilt the engine and transmission at 240K. The undercarriage is an ongoing project on those trucks.
It hauled our entire house to the site, it is a worker beast.

I didn't watch the videos, but one recollection I had of the guy was he'd take weekend trips down to Florida from NY!
