It's Friday. Relax and ponder some of the mysteries of life.

Why do people, after making a sandwich, leave the knife on the edge of the sink?

I've done it, but I've decided it makes no sense to do it anymore.

My DW does it.

When I was younger my roommate(s) did it.

The knife is dirty. It's not in the sink, it's not in the dishwasher. It's not going to be used again any time soon.

Is the person that does this proudly proclaiming, "Hey, look. I made a sandwich. Now you clean up my mess."

What's up with that?

I only do it with knives having a wooden handle.

Major pet peeve of mine.

Neither my wife or I do it, and while raising kids, it was a behavior quickly corrected.

Our sandwich knives are either left on the counter where the sandwich was made or in the sink. Never even pondered leaving it teetering on the sink edge.

For the knife shown, for the purpose you used it for, I take a paper towel and wipe off the excess peanut butter. If the dishwasher doesn't have clean dishes in it, awaiting to be put away, in it goes. If not, it goes in the sink or on the side of the sink to await the next opportunity to put it in the dishwasher.

But! I also use sharp knives for other projects. Those don't go in the dishwasher. And I'm always worried about them being wet while sitting in the sink. I wipe them off as well and put them next to the sink to await the next hand-wash.

Cheers

Sharp knife - clean after every use and back on the magnetic strip. Used for peanut butter and marmalade may stay on the edge for re-use, but is normally rinsed off. Mustard or otherwise - nope.

We would never have that much excess left over from making a sandwich. The excess would be eaten or wiped clean on the other piece of bread. After eating 4 sandwiches a day, everyday, for 35 years, I have the experience. the "clean" knife would then go to dishwasher.

I have never done that. In fact until today I don’t think I have ever seen anyone do that.
I’ve also been cutting avocados since I was a teenager and never once cut my fingers/ hands because I know how to cut up an avocado with a sharp knife.

Never seen anyone do that. Dirty dishes, including utensils, get a quick rinse and dropped into the small side of the sink, then loaded into the dishwasher in the evening. Of course, if the sink gets full before evening, then the dishwasher gets loaded earlier. Leaving dirty dishes out is a pet peeve of mine.

I sometimes do that, after using the knife for butter, thinking that I might either want more butter or need it for something else butter adjacent. Butter doesn't really contaminate the knife if you then use it for mayo or whatever. I wouldn't cut raw pork and then use the same knife for butter though.

I clean the knife right now and put it away, or into the sink or dishwasher it goes. No knives teetering on the counter edge here. Usually I wipe them off with my napkin before that.

If you are worried about cutting yourself, they have cut resistant gloves now. No idea how well they work though. I'm sure they are not Mithril.

All of my knives have wood handles so I'm careful about not putting them in water. Now a king cake, that's different. The knife stays in the box.

I want to enjoy my sandwich and cleanup after. Or have a second sandwich

😀

is possible that the eater is pondering a second sandwich and then will use the knife again not having to wash it twice?

Yes, this makes a little bit of sense, but has anyone ever made another sandwich and reused the knife?

We don't do it and don't eat 2 sandwiches either.

I don't. I wash knives immediately after using, and put them away. Then again, I don't eat sandwiches, either, after my prediabetes diagnosis last year.

As clean as this group seems to be, I’d guess nobody has married into an ADHD family!😂

DW makes me wipe off my peanut butter knife and put it in the dishwasher.
Sharp knives for cheese, I leave on the edge ‘cuz I might want another piece of cheese. DW put an end to that too.
