why you should spend

I think caring about $4 expenses is the only reason I managed to save any money since I never made much. But I wouldn't let someone else buy it for me either, kwim?
So did I. But I stopped when I realized it cost more time to calculate the $4 savings and save on the big ticket items like a house and car.

And mayo? Buy Japanese kewpie. It's different from American mayo. It's the higher fat content. It's yellow versus white. And really good.

They need Robbie b. Or rather they need anyone to show them how to crack that pocketbook. And so $300k cad is less in USD but it's still more than most retirees

This weekend my MIL told me she couldn't fathom paying $4 for a bottle of Mayo, so i threw it in the cart. My FIL wasnt an amaryllis plant for $7, same thing. Can they afford it? Yes. How do I know?
Maybe I'm just petty, but I wouldn't buy things for people if they're too cheap to pay for it themselves when I knew that they could easily afford it.

There's cheap versus frugal. Cheap is taking advantage of other people's generosity. Frugal is simply being smart about getting the most value for your money and living beneath your means.

I get being frugal in the accumulation stage, but staying frugal when you have more than you need is a waste of all the time being frugal on the way up.
Anyone remember Erma Bombeck? To paraphrase her, burn the candles before they melt in storage.
Buy the good mayo.
She also wondered how many women passed up the dessert cart on the Titanic

real mayo snobs make their own...

but Duke's is good enough for me, albeit sparingly.

have switched to plain greek yogurt for dishes like broccoli salad...tangier than mayo, better for you.

When I moved to the South I soon learned that real Southerners use Duke's. Especially for 'mater sandwiches. I'm afraid I'll never be a real Southerner.

Sounds good.
I've been having a lot of BLTs with mayo lately:

I’m sure I am not the only that discovered in my teens that DM had lied to us for years by telling us Kraft Salad Dressing is the same as Mayo. Same with margarine instead of butter.

There is no such thing as "good mayo". That is my #1 most hated food except maybe avocados. Might be a tie.

...
You know it's just an egg, some canola oil and a tiny bit of mustard, right?

I grew up on Miracle Whip - I know it is NOT mayo. But it's what I'm used to. We used it because it was cheaper back in the day. Not so much these days. DW's mom put Miracle Whip between two slices of white bread and called it lunch for DW many school days.

Miracle Whip has a "sweet" taste IMO and if I remember correctly. I never developed a taste for it.

My brother liked Miracle Whip. Not for me.

Some people age like that because they previously needed to be frugal, they lived below their means, accumulated 'wealth', but a tiger doesn't change his stripes. Could be that frugality is so engrained in their mindset and routine they don't know how to do anything different. Seems OP's example is to an extreme, which is a shame cuz they put a lot of thought and emotion on a non-issue.

My wife still uses coupons, gets gas when/where the price is lowest, will run to certain store with the lowest price, because she was raised low middle class and we worked for everything we have. Yet, we retired before 50 at a ~2% WR. Good quality in a spouse, but I wish she could take that effort and repurpose it where it would improve her quality/satisfaction of life.

Other posters reminded me the full name of this product is Kraft Miracle Whip Salad Dressing

To be mayo you need at least 65% oil. Miracle Whip has less so it is "dressing". (I looked it up but found it rather dull to post). We never it in the house when I was a kid and I've never bought any.

Yeah, it's definitely different than Mayo. MW is tangy while Mayo is sort of bland.

I don't eat mayo period, but my DW will only buy BLUE PLATE mayo. She says all other wannabe Blue plate when they grow up! If we go out to eat and I get a burger or a sandwich with mayo on it I send it back. Because I make sure to tell them when I order NO MAYO. I had a waiter one day took it back and wiped the mayo of then returned it to me. I called him back over and sent it back again because I could still taste it!

I know this feeling! We got where we are because of my wife's frugal ways, but now we are pretty much living on our SS and our large nest egg just grows. Every Wednesday she sits at the computer and goes through the grocery store ads to see what is on sale and find the bogos. Yesterday, she was out buying Christmas candy gifts a steep discounts to give away. As you say, a good quality in a spouse, but at 70 it is a bit grating as it is no longer needed.
