Wine - Discussion, Travel & More

You inherited wine too! Wow. I have a pretty good collection but probably no more than 4 year's worth.

We discovered Carmenere in Chile on a trip there. Have gotten some at home after that, but I still lean toward pinot noir.
Yes, Pinot Noir. A very beautiful but temperamental grape/wine. A very thin skinned grape, prone to bruising and sun scald. I made some delicious Pinot fron Sonoma but my supplier lost the contract. Found another farmer from Suisun Valley which produced a wonderful wine. But was shut out for 3 years as they signed a contract with the Biltmore winery in NC. Last year, available to me again, bought a boatload of grapes. I have been bottling it now for a few weeks when I can't garden in the rain. I love Pinot with grilled salmon, can't be beat!

I drink too much, and make my own. Only problem is It doesn't age enough to get great. So , ai drink table wine and am happy. Its cheap but takes time to make.

My wine journey began 55 years ago at a hometown restaurant in Michigan with my mom and dad and three brothers when my parents who knew nothing about wine took the waitress's advice and ordered Lancers Rose which I thought was pretty classy in a ceramic bottle.
At the U of M in Ann Arbor there was a wine shop close to where my roommates and I lived and we experimented with Tokay and Châteauneuf-du-Pape and others.
The peak was probably at a private dinner at Computex hosted by wealthy Taiwanese clients in the Villas section of the MGM Grand where eight of us ran up a $20K tab that included a couple of bottles of 82' Chateau Lafite Rothschild.
DW and I still have an 81' Lafite that we are saving for a special occasion.
Favorite bottle - Chateau Monbousquet a St Emilion Grand Cru Classe, that we had on our wedding day at a French Restaurant in Hong Kong 35 years ago. DW liked it so much, we had two bottles between us.

Do you like Grenache, chilled, in the summer time? While I use Grenache in a few of my blends, I usually have some as a single varietal. Very food worthy and love it with grilled octopus.
Stainless or concrete Grenache, yes. Oaked more room temp. I love grilled octopus.

Grenache: what Pinot aspires to. :)
Ooh, in certain parts those are fighting words.

I'm currently spending the summer in the south of France, and this turn in the thread is making me want to seek out a Tavel (there is a heat wave) or when it cools down, open up some of the other southern Rhone wines in the cupboard

I love southern Rhône wines. Gigondas, CdP.

It's nice to see this thread resurrected!

We have recently taken a liking to Italian red wines. Learning that the younger wines need much more time to breathe vs. California reds. It is fun to get exposed to new (to us) wines!

Does anyone have a favorite wine app? We have used Vivino, but it has a lot of ads now. We are also looking to have a way to track wines that we have and "best by" or recommended windows to drink (or how long to age).

CellarTracker is the best.
