Having just one referee trying to see and manage what's going on in a huge field with 22 players seems insane. With all the intentional pushing, grabbing, and tripping that takes placed and gets passed or at most a free kick it does seem strange that they call a red card for something unintentional while both players are fighting for the ball. England had the same thing happen to them in the game against Mexico and went a good part of the 2nd half short one man. Will be interesting to see if the England player gets reinstated.
I'm hearing the review was underway anyway, and follows a precedent from some other players (Renaldo as one), but yes, he should have stayed out of it IMO.
I agree. Paraguay showed us how low a team will go to win, provoking and fouling left and right. Mbappe was a real pro and didn’t let it get to him.
It was a shame one of those teams (England and Mexico) had to lose. Not that I am advocating for a draw. As Big Lip Leo said, “A tie is about as satisfying as kissing your sister.”

And as I understand no foul, not even a yellow card, was called on the field. The red card was called by the replay booth (not the right term but you get the idea).
I generally agree, but "one bad call" typically doesn't result in the player being suspended for the rest of the current game and the next game.
In that case there wouldn't have been a foul to begin with because the referee on the field didn't call a foul, not even a yellow card.
But the VAR did! The VAR is the check and balance and an extension of the on field ref. And after review he agreed. So he DID make the decision! At least he did in the game I watched.

No. When Balogun's boot made contact with Muharemović's ankle, referee Raphael Claus initially called a normal foul. Play stopped immediately as Muharemović remained down on the pitch.
