Looks like the United States will be getting eggs from the country of Turkey. Tons of them.

The recent avian flu outbreak in the United States has significantly disrupted egg supplies, prompting increased demand for imports.

The Egg Producers Central Union of Türkiye (YUM-BİR) announced a preliminary agreement to export approximately 15,000 tons of eggs to the U.S. by June.

YUM-BİR head İbrahim Afyon stated that the U.S. is turning to Türkiye as a reliable supplier while dealing with the outbreak. “The U.S. will meet its needs from Türkiye, which offers both security and strong supply capacity, until the avian flu crisis subsides,” he said.

The outbreak has led to the culling of over 21 million birds, exacerbating supply shortages.

In January, U.S. egg prices surged 15.2 percent monthly, marking the highest increase since June 2015, with an annual hike of 53 percent. In response, U.S. egg imports rose by 38 percent in December compared to the previous month.

We probably will eat them whether we like it or not since eggs are ingredients in many other foods. I would hope USDA tests them to meet US standards. I wonder if some other bird illness will hitch a ride on the eggs..

If I were in Turkey - I would eat hard boiled eggs. I would not bother with imported eggs unless I had no other choice.

Eggs from country outside of USA isn't the first thing I think of when I think of eggs and bacon for breakfast. I would crack (pun intending) and probably eat eggs from Turkey.

I would guess they will all go into prepared/commercial foods, not fresh eggs at the grocery store. In my observation, eggs at the grocery store are regionally produced. But it should help egg prices by reducing demand on US eggs for factory foods.

I eat dried apricots from Turkey. A local mid East market has also sorts of food from countries in the area. When I was in Turkey for several weeks, I must have eaten at least a dozen as part of breakfast and more in various other foods. No problem.

But the USDA has been downsized.

We (ER group) recently had a survey about all the countries visited by ER folks. I expect there was a great deal of food, including eggs, sourced outside of the USA consumed by that group. No one shared a story about illness.

My experience is that safety of food is managed in most places well at the plant level. But, that doesn’t mean perfect as we know from recalls. Restaurants inside and outside the USA pose a more likely risk as the training for food safety might not be done as well as it could. Eating cooked food lowers the risk, typically, no matter where you eat.

The last chicken breasts I grilled were about 2lbs each if I remember correctly. Not sure I trust this either(US grown chickens), something ain't right.

This makes a lot of sense as when I first heard about eggs from Turkey, had me thinking that's a long way to travel to the grocery store.

Hoping they fly them in. 2 weeks at sea gives me a tummy turn. Maybe Waffle House will take them.

So, we're not talking about turkey eggs are we.

I've eaten eggs in all corners of the globe. It never occurred to me that there might be something wrong with them. Other foods? Sure, but eggs?

IIRC, eggs in the UK are more orange than yellow but just as good.

Sure why not?
Will the price go down?:)
