I took a side gig this year that has paid well. So I decided to buy my wife a diamond pendant necklace and earrings. They arrive today. We have several social events between now and Xmas that I know she would love to wear the stuff. Should I give them to her now or wait until Xmas?

I vote wait, so you can exchange together. She'll have many more times to wear them.

I think early would be fine as long as you have something else saved for Christmas.

As my fiance loves jewelry and the fact that we don't give each other gifts for the holidays, I would give it to her now in my situation.
As for your situation, I would still give it to her now and clearly explain that it is a Christmas gift.

I also vote wait.

(DH goes a bit crazy with waiting to gift. If It was up to him, he would probably lob it at me from the doorway before he crossed the thresh hold.)

That said, I'm sure she'll be thrilled either way. With such a gorgeous gift you can't go wrong.

(You might consider broaching the subject, i.e. I got you something special which you might want to wear to the pre-Christmas events, would you prefer to receive your gift now or wait until Christmas?)

Wait if she has enough for now. Gift giving is about timing and Christmas morning is met with anticipation that builds up the excitement of a gift of this magnitude.

By my count the female responses are to wait.

I'd give them to her now. The suspense would be killing me, and who cares if it's Christmas morning. You worked hard for them and so that she could enjoy them. We're not kids who need to understand patience and denying ourselves at this stage of life.

This is a tough one. I love jewelry and would want to wear it to the functions you mentioned but then being surprised on Christmas morning is always fun.
Does she have other jewelry that she would wear this year?
If not I say give it to her before- just do it like you would if it was Christmas morning.

Hmmm.... The necklace will blow her mind and she does not have anything like it. She has fake diamond earrings. Maybe I will give her the necklace now and the earrings on Xmas. This is why I ask people on the internet. I would have never thought of this.

I this is a good idea! If it was me I would want to wear that necklace this year.
I think she will be doubly surprised to then get earrings on Christmas.

That’s an excellent idea and I vote for this approach😊!

Without telling her exactly what it is, ask her.

You might say "My gift to you this year might be something you'd want to wear to the Christmas events we have coming up. Would you like it before Christmas?"

That's a good split. The necklace will be noticed and commented on most likely. Still, it can be appreciated on Christmas dinner, New Years, etc., if you wait.

But I like Marie's suggestion of asking her to decide, I think that's the best approach here.

Another factor: She might now re-think whatever she's getting for you, and doubt her choice, given she's got two weeks to go... but no risk of that when you both open them together. (I could go into a big tailspin if DH had outdone me and I knew beforehand.)

Otherwise, if the answer is "don't wait why wait ever?" then why ever buy christmas and bday gifts at all? Isn't everyone on this forum usually a big fan of delayed gratification lol?

ETA- I missed the usually!
I’m not a fan of delayed gratification. I watched my father do that so he could die at 52.

Wonder how long it will take her to notice this? These are on the mantle in the den.
