Your Favorite 2024 Purchase(s)

Travel, Belize, Croatia, but the best bang for the buck was a July road trip. Taking a ride on the Cumbres & Toltec railroad, with stops in Chico Canyon and Bandelier National Monument. Northern Arizona and New Mexico are just a lot different from where we live, in way south Arizona, and beautiful.

Well the new year is soon upon us so time to look back over the past 12 months to ask ourselves what was our favorite purchase in 2024?

So what was your best purchase for 2024?
Our retirement road-trip-mobile:

Definitely a BTD for us, as we paid cash for it.
Our 2003 GMC Envoy gets 12-14 mpg. Looking forward to a few 33+ mpg road trips in 2025!

Well the new year is soon upon us so time to look back over the past 12 months to ask ourselves what was our favorite purchase in 2024? This year I had a couple which were finalists but in 2023 we took in an emergency foster dog and adopted her officially in 2024, She has been an unexpected joy during a most challenging year!

Here she is:

(Runner up purchase was a BTD private car service from Naples to Rome. My wife did not want the ordeal with the train due to some potential health/mobility challenges so we splurged on a private car. The real treat was that day we took the trip the taxi's in Naples all went on strike, so it was extra crazy traffic that day (IYKYK). We were so glad to have lucked out with an easy escape that day! Saw a lot of tourists lugging bags onto public busses and looking very stressed...not us!

So what was your best purchase for 2024?

Scubamax
My biggest purchase was my first brand new car since 2002- but my favorite purchase was an embroidery quilt kit!

I don’t know if you can count this specifically. But I started a remodeling project in 2023 and wrote the final check of it in 2024. In my opinion, I probably put way too much in the house … but I am so happy I did it. I took down walls, I expanded my kitchen, I made the dining room smaller, and I opened up the living room. I essentially did what everybody claims to hate I have an open concept. On top of that I put new flooring throughout the whole house upstairs and down. I painted it all upstairs and down, and I redid the upstairs bathroom. I have no bathtubs in this house I do not miss them. On top of that there was new furniture to be made. I got IKEA, my dining room table is from Bassett, some new furniture for the basement game room — I just love this house. And next spring I’m doing the deck.

It was a true honest blow that dough moment and it was well worth it. It may take 15 years for it to in house value but I don’t care. There isn’t a thing that I would change.

Can you share the name of the boat? We've done this often (just spent a week in the BVI's in Dec 2024) and $12K sounds like 2013 prices. Cheers, Ron
Ron, sorry to misinform you, but that was our percent of the total cost shared across 5 couples.

A trip to attend DH’s uncle’s 100th birthday party. Uncle passed away three months later.

I guess it has to be our $16k 16 day tour of Sicily and Southetn Italy.

The new-to-us Sun City Texas house about 1 hour from DD/DSIL/DGS/DGD and DS in South Austin (and 15-25 min from 3 of my 4 sisters). We were previously in Sarasoa, FL and would make frequent airplane trips to visit, but now we can be to their front door in the time that it previously would take us to get to the airport.

I miss the nicer Florida winter weather, but with global warming that will improve over time. :)

FYI, Medicare Part B covers the partial cost or even the rental fee of a power mobility device. This includes mobilized scooters.
Don’t you have to have a prescription for a mobility device (DME) before Part B will pay? I can’t see getting a prescription for an ebike. It would be nice though!

The initial payments (deposit, upgrades) on our new retirement home in Reno. A close second were the travel expenses for our Fall English Isles cruise on Princess, 10 days in December on Maui, and final payment on and excursions for a June 2025 Viking Grand European Tour river cruise.

That's awesome! My DW inherited her father's '77 MGB a few years back. It runs and drives most of the time. My job is to get it running reliably enough to teach her to drive it. 🚙
I always liked the lines of the MGB. But these days, I no longer like carburetor's. Give me electronic fuel injection and a turbo charger....or a super charger.
