I experienced one of those sentimental old fool moments.

I've been gathering old stuff to bring away to the Salvation army. One of the things I decided to donate away is an old game set that's part of a table (kind of rickety table) that I got as a give from an old departed friend. Game set has games like chess, backgammon, cards, dominos. Except for sentimental value, it is ready (and I'm ready) for the Salvation Army donation to give the table new life as was just taking up space and getting in the way in my small place.

So, I decide to one last time set up the chess pieces. As, I'm doing my gathering, I've been playing music from the 1970's with a new internet radio I got. I'm there setting up the pieces feeling sentimental when this song comes on. "You're a part of Me" a duet with Kim Carnes. I'm thinking to myself, "Couldn't but have a more fitting song for this!"

I'm not saying this was a paranormal experience or anything (you never know), but just that hearing that song, thinking of my dearly departed friend, setting up the game table one last time, was a sweet moment.

Yes, I notice the "sentimental old fool" moments often these days (goes with being in my 70s perhaps.) Like you, it's music and something else in combo that is the strongest initiator of the feeling.

Nice song that you mentioned:

That's a good video of the song with the words. I'm actually more familiar with the very good cover of this song by Anne Murray (I believe Kim Carnes wrote the song). Is it just me, or do others think, especially in the beginning, that Gene Cotton sounds like Kenny Rogers?

I thought Kim Carnes sounded like Olivia Newton-John at first. (Not so much later.)

Thread drift alert:

Here's my favorite Kim Carnes song:

Love the Sax! Great production with amazing backing vocals. The musicians list is a real "Who's Who" in the industry. Enjoy (from the album that gave us "Betty Davis Eyes.")

I hear the beginning resemblance now in her voice at first and Olivia Newton-John. Until the signature gritty sound of Kim's voice took over ;).

One of the strongest things to yank you back in time is a smell. I know if I smelled those old school candies that grandpa had I'd be right back there.
I would agree with this. Funny how it does it but it does.

To this day, if I smell Diesel Smoke, I am back Roughnecking on Delta Rig 40 in deep East Texas Tripping Pipe. We had the old Waukesha Diesels and when Pulling Out Of The Hole they would puke out a Cloud of Diesel Smoke when first getting loaded on the way up and that smoke would drift over the Rig Floor.
That is over 40 year ago and the memory is vivid if I smell a good bit of Diesel Smoke.
Funny how all that works...

Something like this one? It is a 250VDC genset on a derrick crane rig. It lumps along at 720 RPM and when the operator pulls a lever it goes KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCK and shoots out a cloud like that.
Release the lever and cloud is gone and it's knock knock knock knock.

It was below decks on this rig

It is a mid-60's era ex-Navy Derrick, all electric gear. It has a pair of those Waukeshas, one has a pair of bad jugs but would run if needed. (Just really rough LOL!) All that mass and it made 315 HP.
In front of it in that picture is a 40 Kw Jimmy genset.
Startup is open the sea chest, start the Jimmy to get air compressor powered to start the big knocker.
It had an air starter. It idled ran whatever all at 720 and just added clouds of smoke as needed.
Below decks it was earplugs plus earmuffs for hearing protection. :)
When you grabbed a lever it took all the juice to the house and just shunted what was not used as heat. It had a big bank of resistors for this purpose, it was a very archaic system to get a feathered control.
It could swing and do anything else, but it was either boom or hoist but not both at the same time.
