I have joined the class of 2014 at the age of 50! I have been reading this forum for years and am grateful that it exists. Just a few notes about me. Diligent saver and investor for my 25+ year career. Made a good salary but have always lived modestly. Invested 50% of take home last 10 years after paid off house. Suffered from OMY syndrome for 2+ years. Ended up saving almost double of what I should need plus I get a reasonable pension (non COLA) at 55. Megacorp was stunned when I put in my notice! The top dog came to see me and tried to convince me to stay. After I submitted my work list they hired 2 consultants to do my job. I felt used as I was the type that always did the work, never complained and seldom got noticed (last promotion was in 1994).

A month in and it feels great. People thought I would get bored but I have so many outside interests ( fitness, finance, art, and travel). I also have a live in GF and now I can do most of the cooking and chores which will make her life easier since she is still working.

What I have learned so far is that some people will be jealous and don't understand how I could leave a good paying and secure job. Others are really happy for me. I have shied way from the negative people. The advice I heard from a friend rings true, "Retire when you have enough and you have had enough."

Good job, and sounds like you have analyzed the variables and finances so it works out good for you. Look forward to hearing more.

Having the interests and activities you can have plenty to keep you busy. As you said, hang out with the positive folks.

Welcome and congratulations! Enjoy living your life now rather than Megacorp's!

Good one. I don't recall hearing that one before. Congratulations!!! It must have been hard to leave with them begging you to stay.

Congratulations! I can understand how that would sting a little though.

Congrats - as I get closer I am worried that I too will keep saying OMY. My wife is done in 3 years (at 49), and I think I will may work one year longer than her. or maybe not :)

Last promotion was in 1994 and the top dog came to try to talk you into staying? If you see him again please tell him jclarksnakes says he is a POS.

Yours is a shortened version of Dory36's "BS buckets" posted here in 2006:
At my last employer (overseas), folks said that people started out there with two buckets, one in each hand.

One bucket started empty, and gradually filled with b.s. as you worked there.

The other started out with your net worth, and it too continued to fill as you worked there.

Eventually, the b.s. will outweigh the net worth, and you'll know it's time to go.

Thanks for the words of support. I look forward to adding my two cents on various topics. All the best

Yeah, couldn't agree more. All of a sudden you are critical for the company, but no one will say that while you are still working - probably afraid you would ask for a raise...

The truth is, people aren't always looking for more money, sometimes a little appreciation goes a long way.

Congrats! You are going to like this RETIRED world a whole lot better than the Mega corp world. No one here will judge you except to say congrats!

You all know that we have identified a nice strategy for those who are ready to retire, but might want to squeeze a bit more out of the megacorp... When you have enough money - but can still stand the place, announce you are ready to retire - then when they come trying to get you to stay say you are willing to stay one more year while they adjust to not having you IF they give you 30 % more, etc, etc. - and of course, 2 extra weeks vacation.

This happened to my father when he took early retirement about 30 years ago - boy did he negotiate a sweet deal!

After all, who cares if you are burning your bridges... and if they won't, well you start your retirement earlier - which isn't exactly a big loss. :)

OMY-one more year. I'm not sure one could find it via an acronym finder, but that's how I find out what most acromyms mean.

Mother replied to daughter and said WTF. Daughter asks mom what does WTF mean? Mom replies, wow that's funny.

Congrats and welcome to the class of 2014. I plan to be joining soon!
