I have joined the class of 2014 at the age of 50! I have been reading this forum for years and am grateful that it exists. Just a few notes about me. Diligent saver and investor for my 25+ year career. Made a good salary but have always lived modestly. Invested 50% of take home last 10 years after paid off house. Suffered from OMY syndrome for 2+ years. Ended up saving almost double of what I should need plus I get a reasonable pension (non COLA) at 55. Megacorp was stunned when I put in my notice! The top dog came to see me and tried to convince me to stay. After I submitted my work list they hired 2 consultants to do my job. I felt used as I was the type that always did the work, never complained and seldom got noticed (last promotion was in 1994).
A month in and it feels great. People thought I would get bored but I have so many outside interests ( fitness, finance, art, and travel). I also have a live in GF and now I can do most of the cooking and chores which will make her life easier since she is still working.
What I have learned so far is that some people will be jealous and don't understand how I could leave a good paying and secure job. Others are really happy for me. I have shied way from the negative people. The advice I heard from a friend rings true, "Retire when you have enough and you have had enough."
