IGNORE the reality of commodity markets, and you did not read my post, or at least you did not absorb it.
Cutting our oil consumption by 12% does NOT mean that we would not be buying any Mid East oil. It only means that we would reduce world-wide demand by some small factor (12% times whatever our share of world-wide oil consumption is), and that would reduce the price of oil world-wide by some factor. The Mid East would still sell plenty of oil, and we would not be impacting anyone's morals.
At any rate, I favor conservation and I would love to see us cut oil consumption by 12% - but I suspect the only way that is going to happen is to make oil expensive enough for people to choose to conserve. That was posted twice already in this thread.
