We've had a subscription for over a decade, but I finally canceled the Readers Digest subscription and went with the Amazon.com renewal for $10. Amazon even promises to renew it automatically each year-- without sending us weekly postcards and monthly phone calls. What's the customer retention cost of those bulk mails and unsolicited calls? Gee, I wonder if Amazon has discovered a marketing technique that's somehow eluded Readers Digest.
Since I'd already spent $10 on a product that was eligible for Amazon's "free shipping on orders over $25" offer ("free" because Readers Digest is paying for it!), I went ahead and pre-ordered Jim Butcher's next Harry Dresden book for $16. More smart marketing by Amazon.
Our Readers Digest subscription "expired" last month (instead of the Feb 2013 that I paid for) because RD has been
cutting back on the number of enhancing their print issues. Yet RD is still pestering us weekly with their "best" offer of $19.98. Hopefully they'll get tired of that in a few months and just leave us alone.
