free local radio

I used to go on the internet and type in a radio station and it would lead me to a player that worked fairly well. that was a couple of years ago. I was trying to connect to some local radio stations this morning and all I got was advertising and stations I knew weren't what I was looking for. anyone know of any free software or url to local am and fm channels on the radio? thanks

One thing to try is just google listen to ____ online.
The first station I tried for the MPLS market, KQRS, brings you to their website with a "listen live" button on the top. Minnesota's Classic Rock | | KQRS-FM

There are a bunch of apps out there for iPhones (and I assume Android as well).

For Clear Channel stations, they can be found on iHeartRadio: Listen to Free Radio Stations & Music Online | iHeartRadio

A non company specific app is TuneIn: TuneIn: Listen to Online Radio, Music and Talk Stations

NPR has an app too: NPR: NPR News for iPhone and Android

Traditional jazz, but also with specialty programs and segments throughout the week for blues, latin jazz, artist spotlights, etc

We use the TuneIn app (free version) on our Ipads. I listen to stations throughout the world and it's real easy to select them using a map. All of the locals that stream are there.

It's kinda corrupted my SWL skills when the atmospheric conditions are poor, I just bring up Radio Havana (for example) and the signal is crystal clear.
